The Funeral
Band of Horses Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And comin' up only to show you're wrong
And to know you is hard, we wonder
To know you all wrong, we won
Ooh
Ooh
Really too late to call, so we wait for
Morning to wake you, is all we got
And to know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong, they warn
At every occasion, I'll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion, once more, it's called the funeral
At every occasion, oh, I'm ready for the funeral
At every occasion, oh, one billion day funeral
I'm comin' up only to show you down for
And comin' up only to show you're wrong
To the outside, the dead leaves lay on the lawn
For they don't have trees to hang upon
Ooh
Ooh
At every occasion, I'll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion, once more, it's called the funeral
At every occasion, oh, I'm ready for the funeral
At every occasion, oh, one billion day funeral
The lyrics to Band of Horses’s song The Funeral are cryptic and contemplative, evoking a sense of longing and melancholy. The song starts with the line “I’m comin’ up only to hold you under”, which can be interpreted as the singer’s desire to be close to someone they care about or perhaps even to smother them, leading them to say “and comin’ up only to show you’re wrong”. The next line expresses the singer’s difficulty in understanding the person they are addressing- “to know you is hard, we wonder / to know you all wrong, we won”. It’s possible that this line is about the interpersonal struggles involved in getting to know someone closely.
The song shifts in tone in the second verse, with the apologetic line “Really too late to call, so we wait for / morning to wake you, is all we got”. The singer reveals that they themselves are hard to understand and that they are not the perfect person their admirer might have thought they were with the line “to know me as hardly golden / is to know me all wrong, they warn”. The chorus of the song repeats the lines “At every occasion, I’ll be ready for the funeral / once more, it’s called the funeral” which can be taken to mean that the singer is always ready for the inevitable end of a relationship, perhaps because they are someone who struggles to connect deeply with others.
Overall, the lyrics of The Funeral are introspective and moody, with a focus on the difficulties of intimacy and the inevitability of endings.

Love this song! Here's the lyrics if anyone is wondering, like I was:
I'm coming up only to hold you under
I'm coming up only to show you wrong
And to know you is hard, we wonder
To know you all wrong, we warn
Ooh, ooh
Ooh...
Really too late to call, so we wait for
Morning to wake you, it's all we got
To know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong, they warn
At every occasion, I'll be ready for the funeral
Every occasion once more
It's called the funeral
Every occasion, oh, I'm ready for the funeral
At every occasion of one-billion day funeral
I'm coming up only to you show you down for
I'm coming up only to you show you wrong
To the outside, the dead leaves lay on the lawn
Before they died, they had trees to hang their hope
Ooh, ooh
Ooh...
At every occasion, I'll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion once more, it's called the funeral
At every occasion, oh, I'm ready for the funeral
Every occasion of one-billion day funeral

Find a way to move.
Trust me. It is the only way ur life will feel fulfilled .
I have also met someone online and we had a good distance and a country apart,
I said f it I’m moving and I moved in to their country.
It was worth every second.
He died in my arms ten days before we were set to move back to my country.
That was 8 years ago .
I still have yet to find a relationship or person that connects anywhere near on the same level.
I doubt I ever will,
I have to be a forever widow.
I am only 34.
My heart and soul is broken.
But I don’t regret it because we were on cloud 9 everyday!

My boyfriend had told me one day to play this song at his funeral while we were blasting music in the car as we always did. Never thought that time would come so soon. 20 years young. He passed away unexpectedly a 3 weeks ago. He was in the ICU for 4 days with no brain function. I sat with him all night and played music. Now I am making the video for his funeral and honoring him by putting this song in the video. Its hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember. Life is so fragile. Those moments together are irreplaceable.
