I am much younger than you but this song also brings me memories. I was just a kid sitting next to my 7 year older cousin while he was on the computer showing me rock bands. Takes me back to summer, the sea, no school, just playing in the sun and the smell of sweat, dirt and dry daisies. I think he was much older maybe? I do know my dad can or used to do the soft shoe, tap, and miraculous moves sometimes, he would amaze everyone around. But his main talent was a guitar picker. he is legend, but we never ventured far from home. I knew if he ever did he would be famous now. lololol. We were all just to poor and uninclined to understand that back then I guess. let it be a lesson learned to all. USE YOUR TALENT BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. You know a band is good and loud when they upstage the main act. The crowds literally shook the stadiums during this bands performance. They opened for Led Zeppelin. Zeppelin's manager was having a conniption because his band was being upstaged by the opening band. Manager Peter Grant refused to play anymore shows with Grand Funk Railroad.

Seeing these guys in concert was a amazing experience. I'm glad I got to see them, there great live. My oldest son was only 2 at the time and sat on my shoulders the whole show. There performance will never be forgotten. Everyone should see these guys at least one before there gone forever.

I listened to this song over and over again when I was 19 laying in the hospital blind. It kept me going until I could recover my sight. It was a scary time for me. Great Album. Memorized all of it. Released in 1970 I believe the second album (The Red Album). Great stuff by Terry Knight.

I love songs like this where the meaning can be so ambiguous. We could take it literally or figuratively. I think it’s about someone battling a disease, and the body is the “ship” that he is so desperate to hold on to, but eventually gives in and accepts death. Once he accepts death, and is on his way home, he is at peace. The stranger on the boat is the illness, and is seeking help to get the stranger off. So well written.

I enlisted in the USAF in 1975 right out of high school.A lot of you were back home and the war was over when I was a junior in high school I look at the Vietnam Vets as our big brothers and sisters in my age group. I have nothing but love and respect for all of you, I just did not agree with the government to send you all there. This song makes me think of you all because of the comments I have read over the years when I have played this song. I just want to say I love and respect all of you. Agree. I had many older relatives that went to the Nam.
A senseless lost of kids. Older teenagers .They were 19 ,20, 21 years of age and some of course older.
If they weren't killed they came back with ptsd and being sprayed with agent orange which did not make logical sense to spray the air aimed at the Vietnamese and everyone was affected by it.
This Classic also could relate to someone who took a hallucinating drug like LSD or Acid and had a Bad Trip. And was on a Bad trip for weeks month and even years. And just wanting to get back to Normality.

I once heard someone say; "Damn, [sic] the ending goes on forever! It must have been one hell of a long trip;" etc. Whatever... To me, the orchestral crescendo and the entwined surrealistic mix of this song was the most significant part. I have absorbed this song thousands of times since I was a teenager, and I still experience jubilation from it each and every time listen to it. Gosh, I was 16 when this was released. Amazing that is still sounds fantastic 45 years later. I was extremely homesick when I was on a trip to Europe in 1974 and on the way home this song comforted me and played it repeatedly until we touched down at JFK Airport.

The music of the 60'S and 70'S and early 80's was the best, on my opinion. I'm so glad that I grew up in those days. Saw GrandFunk, once in concert. Back in those days, so many groups toured, and ticket prices were low, so it was awesome to say that I probably saw most of them. Started with the BEATLES IN 1964, I was in the 7th grade. And from there it was a concert every weekend. Things have changed so much since those days. So this HIPPIE chick has amazing memories. And I went to WOODSTOCK, CAN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT.!!! And I went to school with the guys from LYNYARD SKYNYRD, knew them all. So I would say all in all, the 60'S and 70'S were so GROOVY MAN....CAN YOU DIG IT !!!!! GRAND FINK...WAS. AWESOME, AND THIS IS AND WAS, STILL IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS FROM.THAT TIME... IM.YOUR CAPTION ..YEAH..YEAH.YEAH......YEAH.... CAN you hear me...or Am I all alone....

really sad that woodstock is the highlight of anyone's life... it only defines the lives of those who went. The rest of America had more important and fulfilling things to do with their lives! lol.. id be embarrassed if I went to woodstock.

@Nate Cameron so sorry to hear you have a sour way of this amazing time in music, and the bring Imbarrased if you went to WOODSTOCK, you obviously don't like the great Rock songs of the 60's and 70'S. But those of us that went, sure there were other things in the world going on, but this area was an awesome time for RocknRoll....sorry you don't get it..... WOODSTOCK wasn't the only thing that defined life. But to think those of us that went were only defined by WOODSTOCK is your opinion, but for the rest of us. It was the best ROCKNROLL SHOW EVER. NOTHING WILL EVER COMPARE TO IT. TOO BAD YOU DIDN'T GO TO ECPERIENCE THE GROOVY ROCK SCENE..THEN YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN AS INTO THE ROCK MUSIC AS THE MILLIONS THAT WENT WERE. SO SORRY FOR YOU.....

One of the best songs ever. Brings back a ton of good memories from my early teens. This band always rocked and it's a shame they are not in the hall of fame as they should be. People missed out on some of their music on the radio due to the law suits that took place but thanks a lot for this post. Great.

This song brings back beautiful memories of 1997/98 when I was a rookie at the university. Excursions and concerts with my friends and fellow students. I wasn’t even born when this song came out but I’m glad it’s a part of my life just as many other old and new songs are.

I know this band as THE ULTIMATE ROCK TRIO aka Grand Funk Railroad...They could produce the same power and sound live as they had done in the studio...They proved many rock critics wrong who had said it couldn't be done...

Awesome song for cutting loose in an old automobile. I graduated in '02, my dad and uncle told me how cool GFR was back in their school days. Still love it.
