When I was in high school I was at a friend's house talking to him and his mom. This is the first time I've ever heard this song kudos to Loretta Lynn for Having the courage to sing it. I worked with many women in my lifetime many of them were happy to have a child as I was many were in such a sad state because their husbands didn't care how many children they had they worked hard outside of the home and like slaves in the home. Women should have control of their bodies. I spent many days and evenings listening and feeling sad for the women that had so many problems with an on feeling unthinking spouse who usually disappeared when the going got tough and the so-called tough got going. All those bleeding hearts out there that like to condemn other women are full of it they do nothing for these women when they are left behind. I would feel so bad for some of my colleagues that it would drive me to tears and did the best I could to help them when the system forced them to have children they couldn't afford and then called them low life when they ask for help get real people even though some of us have had an easy some women have had a very very hard. I'd no idea about her banned songs. Hollywood glossed over this stuff and it's so integral to understanding Loretta Lynn's life and career.
I know Stand By Your Man is Tammy Wynette and not Loretta Lynn, but it's a common perception of woman of country, but it doesn't mean doormat. It can also be an independent choice, one with real boundaries and laying down the law in a relationship. I've seen women who stayed with men that were terrible cheats and no one could understand why? But now they're both 60 and he's grown up, they have a deeply intimate relationship and are best friends. I'm not suggesting anyone stay if it's not right for them, but I think there are all kinds of feminists who stay in difficult marriages, for whom faith is paramount and they're not given the respect they deserve, because they don't tick all the right boxes. Yet when we hear their story and how they definine their lives they're incredibly powerful and independent.

I'd never heard this song until now, and it's shocking how many people commenting don't realize that the pill (hormonal birth control) was banned in some parts of the country, or in some areas it was illegal to prescribe to unwed women (or without the husband's permission).

@Julie Reminiec You've got to be kidding ? I was ecstatic when girlfriend went on the pill and happy she stayed on it when we married. Happy she stopped taking it both times we decided to have kids. I can't imagine any man, husband or otherwise not giving his consent for his partner to go on the pill.

RIHP. She met her future husband, Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn, when she was only 13. They married a year later, and she gave birth to her first child when she was 14 years old.
