Drivin' On 9
The Breeders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drivin' on 9
You could be a shadow
Beneath the street light
Behind my home

Drivin' on 9
I sure miss you
Pass a motel
Looking at the piles

Drivin' on 9
Looking for one thirty
Maybe I passed it
Go another mile

Drivin' on 9
Drivin' on 9

Drivin' on 9
I sure look pretty
Carson City
Walking down the isle

Drivin' on 9
Does daddy have a shutgun
He said he'd never need one
Go another mile

Drivin' on 9

Drivin' on 9
Looking out my window cell
Wondering if I want you still
Wondering what's right

Drivin' on 9
Drivin' on 9

Overall Meaning

The Breeders' "Drivin' on 9" is a melancholic song that touches on the themes of nostalgia and loneliness. The lyrics describe someone driving down Route 9, searching for something that they've lost or left behind. The first verse speaks about the possibility of a shadow lurking in the corners of one's home, perhaps a reminder of an old love that's now gone. As the song continues, the singer becomes fixated on finding a specific location and wonders if they've passed it. The line "Looking out my window cell, wondering if I want you still, wondering what's right" hints at a past relationship or maybe even a difficult decision the singer must make.

The lyrics are vague yet dreamy, with Kim Deal's vocals holding a note of wistfulness. The repetitive chorus "Drivin' on 9" only emphasizes the fact that the driver is meandering down the deserted road, lost in their memories. The imagery of the lonely traveler and the empty, dark backdrop accentuates a feeling of displacement and isolation.

I totally fell in love with this melancholy, yet strangely chipper little sing-along when I first heard it in the 1990s..

@Morgenlar

This song took me back to a place I'd never been but will always miss

@bostaffsarecool

My mom used to sing this to me when I couldn't sleep when I was 1-4 y/o. When I was younger (7-9), I used to listen to it when I missed her (divorced parents). I cried to it many times. So many countless times.
I've been very burnt out and easily frustrated recently. Crying over the smallest triumphs. It feels nice to relive my old nastolgia and sadness

Edit: my mom isnā€™t dead or anything, i just donā€™t see her often and it makes me sad

EDIT #2: I JUST SAW THE BREEDERS LIVE AND THEY PLAYED NO ALOHA FROM THE LAST SPLASH (i started crying)
