Touch the Hem of His Garment
Sam Cooke Lyrics

She had been sick,
Sick so very long
But she heard 'bout Jesus was passin' by
So she joined the gathering throng
And while she was pushing her way through
Someone asked her "what are you trying to do?"
She said "if I could just touch the hem of his garment I know I'll be made whole"
She cried "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
And "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
"Oh Lord Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
And "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
Said "If I could just touch the hem of his garment I know I'll be made whole"
And whoa, she spent her money
Here and there
Until she had no,
Had no more to spare
The doctors, they done all they could
But their medicine would do no good
When she touched him, the savior didn't see
But still he turned around and cried "somebody touched me"
She said "it was I who just wanna touch the hem of your garment
I know I'll be made whole right now"
She stood there cryin' "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
"Oh Lord" and "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
"Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
And "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
Said "if I could just touch the hem of your garment
I know I'll be made whole right now"
The song "Touch The Hem Of His Garment" by Sam Cooke tells the story of a woman who had been sick for many years and had spent all her money seeking medical help but found no cure. When she heard that Jesus was passing by, she joined the crowd to see Him, and with great faith, she pressed her way through just to touch the hem of His garment. She knew in her heart that if she touched even the hem of His garment, she would be healed. When Jesus felt her touch, He turned around, asking who touched Him, and the woman answered that it was her. Jesus said that her faith had made her whole.
The lyrics of the song highlight the theme of faith, believing in something that one cannot see or prove. The main character of the song, a woman who had been sick for many years, has spent all her money seeking medical help but found no cure. She heard about Jesus and knew that He could cure her. However, when she finally saw Him, she knew that the only way she could be healed was to touch even just the hem of His garment. The song shows the power of faith and the belief that healing is possible when one has faith in a higher power.

Whoa, there was a woman in the Bible days
There was once a woman during the biblical period
She had been sick, Sick so very long
This woman had been ill for a substantial amount of time
But she heard 'bout Jesus was passin' by
She found out that Jesus was going through her area
So she joined the gathering throng
Thus she went out and joined the crowd that was following Jesus
And while she was pushing her way through
As she made her way through the crowd
Someone asked her "what are you trying to do?"
A person in the crowd asked her what she was trying to accomplish
She said "if I could just touch the hem of his garment I know I'll be made whole"
She replied that, if she had the opportunity to touch the hem of Jesus' clothing, she believes that she would be healed
She cried "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
She then called out to the Lord
And "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
She repeated her call to the Lord
"Oh Lord Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
She cried out to the Lord again
And "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
Once again, she called upon the Lord's name
Said "If I could just touch the hem of his garment I know I'll be made whole"
Her last words before her prayer were that her faith in touching Jesus' clothes would grant her salvation
And whoa, she spent her money Here and there Until she had no, Had no more to spare
The woman spent all her money on various treatments and medicines
The doctors, they done all they could But their medicine would do no good
Though she had sought medical attention, none of their treatments provided her with relief
When she touched him, the savior didn't see But still he turned around and cried "somebody touched me"
Regardless of Jesus not witnessing her touch on his clothing, he felt something and turned around asking who had touched him
She said "it was I who just wanna touch the hem of your garment I know I'll be made whole right now"
The woman was honest and admitted to touching Jesus' clothing believing it would heal her
She stood there cryin' "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
She stood there and cried to the Lord
"Oh Lord" and "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
She continued to call out to the Lord
"Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
She cried once more to the Lord's name
And "Oh Lord" (Oh Lord)
Lastly, her refrain was to call upon the Lord one more time
Said "if I could just touch the hem of your garment I know I'll be made whole right now"
Again, she repeated her unwavering faith that Jesus' clothing would heal her

I used to love this song as a little girl and no one ever really understood why because it always made me cry. As an adult, it still makes me cry. But what most don't understand, those tears are tears of comfort, joy, and thankfulness to GOD for the Savior. HIS love, mercy, and grace has carried me through so much, but never more than December 2021.

Never heard anyone else sing it , but I don’t want to hear anyone else sing it. One of my absolute favourites of his songs.
