My Dad turns 84 next week and he is the greatest father a kid could ever have. I was the middle of 7 kids and Dad formed special bonds with each of us. He and I connected through our love of music and he spoon-fed me a steady diet of the greatest rock and pop of that era.... in a time when his contemporaries were old-farts stuck in the doo-wop era and listening to Frank Sinatra and Vic Damone. His brother Muff said when his voice broke he sounded like his hero Ray Charles. Amazing he was 15 or 16. I have quite a few albums he recorded. Not all of the solo albums but most of the early albums. He never sounds bad. Even now when many singers should think about retiring he sounds great. It seems this song has always been with me. As a guitarist and singer, I've been playing this song since I bought the album. I had already been a Winwood fan before Blind Faith. I went to a Military Academy for college - Vietnam era and I'd play this song alone at night trying to ring understanding from the lyrics. After the service, onto law school. After classes i was playing it in bars and restaurants at nights and weekends. Quiet moments at night, when I needed to listen to it or play it throughout my life. Retired now, still playing it. Probably understand it more now than I ever did when I was younger. Hypnotic. Meaningful. True. I'll always want and need to play it...

Solomon said it is best not to ask "Why were the former days better than these?" And with good reason! They're gone forever and would you want to relive those years of struggle and heartbreak, loss of loved ones, emotional pain, struggling to make ends meet all over again? I wouldn't. I had a number of tragedies occur in my life, including near-death experiences that I'm glad are in my past and am not currently dealing with. I am thankful to God for today and for whatever fond memories of my past that I have. But I do understand your sentiments and I agree. I'm fully aware of your point about music being aired on the radio years after an album or a song would be released. '60s and early '70s pop/rock is all I listen to and have in my vinyl LP and CD collection, videos also. Take care, William.

I know I keep saying this but... I am SO grateful for being raised by this music. Especially from the 60’s. I was just a kid, but music affected me deeply. Back then music was true and real. I remember us waiting for the next new “album” to come out and experiencing the whole thing. Not just a manufactured song. Yeah I may be “considered” old - 62, but I’m glad I’m this age! We had it so good. So grateful.

This song helped me become a more spiritual person. The lyric "and I'm wasted and I can't find my way home" hit me. It reminded me that I felt wasted and no good. I realized I was surrounded by people who feel wasted, and I felt that lyric pushed me to keep searching myself. It really did change me. How I went from a crazy unlikable guy in a friend group with my ex to a very spiritual and thoughtful person. Music really is powerful, you just have to find the right songs.

Didn't help we knew it would happen, as he had cystic fibrosis since he was 7, but had managed it well, until he didn't. I was given a million suggestions for books to read, but only one book did anything to help. It's called "Good Grief". Mine was a little paperback, you could read it in a day or two, and the cover had orange & brown stripes on it. No clue who wrote it. But it helped me realize that everything that was freaking me out back then was perfectly normal. It helped me. I hope it might help you, too. One step at a time, Dusty. I lost my younger brother last Sept. He just turned 48. He died of alcoholism. All alone in his house. I didn't know he drank that much. His girlfriend died of the same thing last April. But she at least had hospice for pain relief at the end. He wouldn't let me know what was happening, and I didn't until I found him. He loved music, had drums, guitars, even a violen. Could play them too. He had many other talents. If you can help somebody with their addiction, please do. It's horrible to see what it can do to people. This song takes on so much of a different meaning now.

He has a great way about him and ppl like my son. But he is a thief, and a drug user. I am so sorry to hear about your son. I have 2 kids, a daughter as well who is an alcoholic. She just got out of rehab on Sunday 5/16/21. She has 3 kids as well. It seems no matter how I try to help them, they keep going back to the same shit. I am still not giving up on my kids. I have to keep trying and praying mostly. I feel so bad/hurt for you. No parent should ever have to bury a child. I love you too. God be with you.
