Song for No One
Miike Snow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met you on the palisades
The sun was spilling kerosene
And I was feeling wide awake
Girl, you can be so obscene
And when you sang a lullaby
A missionary called your name
You disappeared and hopped a flight
For the Serengeti plain

Tell everyone you know
Open up the door
Tell everyone you know
Open up the door

When your love has gone
You carry on
This is her song
This is a song for no one
This is a song for no one

I think I own a photograph
That shows her in the freezing rain
With the Italians on the bank
They know how to entertain
A string of pearls behind your head
A music box to catch your tears
Now call your mother in L.A.
She hasn't heard your voice in years

Tell everyone you know
Open up the door
Tell everyone you know
Open up the door

When your love has gone
You carry on
This is her song
This is a song for no one
This is a song for no one
This is a song for no one

When your love has gone
You carry on
This is her song
This is a song for no one

You can jump a ride
But don't ask why
And don't close your eyes

This is a song for no one
This is a song for no one
This is a song for no one

Overall Meaning

"Song For No One" by Miike Snow is a beautifully crafted pop-rock song that explores the fragile yet tenacious nature of love. The opening verse of the song takes us to the Palisades, where the singer meets someone who is "obscene" but also fascinatingly captivating. The intensity of their connection is highlighted through the juxtaposition between the sun spilling "kerosene" and the singer feeling "wide awake." The second verse introduces us to the image of a photograph that the singer owns, where his love interest is seen in freezing rain with the Italians on the bank. The image is so delicately painted that it evokes a deep sense of melancholy and longing.

The chorus of "Song For No One" carries a sense of defeat and resignation, where it is established that the love has gone, and the singer has to carry on with memories of the love that he once had. The line, "This is her song/This is a song for no one," is reflective of the fact that the love they shared was unique to them, and now that it's gone, it's hard to explain it to anyone else. The sense of loss and nostalgia is also reflected in the line, "You can jump a ride/But don't ask why/And don't close your eyes," which suggests that the singer is still trying to hold on to the memories, but there's no point in questioning them.

Overall, "Song For No One" is a beautifully crafted song with vivid storytelling and evocative imagery that makes it a unique and memorable addition to Miike Snow's discography.
