'39
Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the year of '39, assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen

And the night followed day
And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew

In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the earth is old and grey, little darling, we'll away
But my love, this cannot be
Oh, so many years have gone though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand
For my life
Still ahead
Pity me

Overall Meaning

'39 is a song by British rock band Queen, written by guitarist Brian May. The song tells an emotionally powerful story about space travel and time dilation. The lyrics describe a group of volunteers departing from Earth in the year of 1939 for a journey across the "milk-seas" to find a new home due to Earth's imminent destruction. After many years, the crew returns to the Earth but the planet has significantly aged. The song ends with the singer calling out to his lover who is "many years away". Despite the difficult circumstances, the song ends with a message of hope, as the singer looks forward to the land that their grandchildren will know.

Has anyone else noticed how this song is like the whole story of Intersteller in less than 4 mins. Apart from the similar story line
1. Part where "land is few" from song is similar to Intersteller where irrigable land is short.
2. Writing letters in the sand is similar to way they communicate via writing morse code on dirt.
3. The way they come back in around an year. But after 100 earth Years.
4. When Cooper from Intersteller comes back to his old Daughter is similar to "Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me."
5. End of movie when Cooper s Daughter dies and he continues is like "For my life
Still ahead
Pity Me."
Any idea if Intersteller was inspired from '39

Can we make a petition for this song to be played everywhere on january 1st, 2039

@martinihusak2294

Make it the whole year of 2039 for that matter

@stickydilo7567

@@martinihusak2294 The sad fact is that The Queen members won't be alive then since they're like 70 now...

@Solo-vh9fm

@@stickydilo7567 Brian would be in his early 90s, and Roger and John would be in their late 80s. They might still be alive.

@stickydilo7567

@@Solo-vh9fm Well, let's just hope so

@octobermaxwell9594
