Classical music was really in its heyday at the end of the 19th century. So much good opera, ballet, marches, waltzes, dance music. There will never be anything like it!

I am now thankful for the all cartoons I watched as a child that featured classical music. For now I have a greater appreciation and love for this genre of music. As I age, I now find that I want to discover all that I have missed.

(They used to run them on TV, and Charles Schulz, who would often depict Peppermint Patty and Marcie at these concerts, said that whenever they panned the camera over the audience every single one of those kids looked as if they'd rather be anywhere else.) No, show them Fantasia and the appropriate Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry cartoons--and they will love classical music the rest of their lives!

This "Dance of the Hours" is a ballet music piece that is part of his "La Gioconda" opera. Ponchielli died in Milan on January 16, 1886 and was interred there in the "Cimitero Monumentale"

@@thomashogan16 I’d argue that sections of his ballet and concertos are quite happy. Though you are right to say that Tchaikovsky often comes off as torn. His pieces are more emotionally dynamic, whereas the Italian composers had to tell prescribed stories through their music.

A beautiful work by Ponchielli, that Allan Sherman ruined for me almost 60 years ago with his colloquial rendition of "Hello Mudda". All kidding aside, Sherman was a very funny man, and Dance of the Hours is a timeless piece, pun intended, that is always fun to listen to.

Agreed. Born and raised in the 90s, I listened to a lot of rap, so I was mostly interested in that style of music (and I'm just fine with that). But in the past few years, I've definitely expanded my tastes in music (rock, country, R&B, classical, drum n' bass, etc.). You just gotta get out there and look for stuff.
Heck, I've discovered some of my favorite artists at the moment by randomly looking up stuff right here on YouTube. :D
