Godhopping
Dogs Die in Hot Cars Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Smile a lot 'cause they're having so much fun
Even when they know they're not
They'll wear some tiny little hat and they'll feel good
They'll feel good 'cause their hat is silly
And silly means that their time is good
I've learnt that indecision only brings no joy,
So much joy to a fickle little world
That every night i do TV, film myself CCTV
And there's panic on the street when it's not around
So we go to
All the traffic and children
Live far away
On the back of a big bus all the way to Bombay
When they go I am with them
But it won't be long
Godhopping for good times
When everything starts to go wrong
Powder cake they wear their makeup veils
Veils that hide them underneath such sweaty perfume smells
High-healed they are always looking down
Down their confidence is struggling hard to get around
I've learnt that indecision only brings no joy,
So much joy to a fickle little world
That every night i do TV, film myself CCTV
And there's panic on the street when it's not around
So we go to
All the traffic and children
Live far away
On the back of a big bus all the way to Bombay
When they go I am with them
But it won't be long
Godhopping for good times
When everything starts to go wrong
The lyrics to Dogs Die in Hot Cars' song "Godhopping" seem to touch on themes of escapism, hedonism, and the search for happiness amid the chaos of modern life. The first stanza suggests that many people put on a happy face even when they're not genuinely content, and that sometimes the little things (like a silly hat) can bring a temporary sense of satisfaction. The second stanza touches on the idea of indecision leading to unhappiness, which is contrasted with the singer's own decision to constantly document their life on CCTV and TV. The last stanza seems to depict a desire to escape from the pressures of everyday life, whether that's through traveling to distant lands or simply through "godhopping" (presumably seeking out different forms of pleasure).
Overall, the song paints a somewhat bleak picture of modern society, where happiness can be difficult to come by and people often feel the need to adopt a facade of happiness. It also suggests that technology (CCTV, TV) may contribute to this sense of anxiety and disconnection. However, the upbeat tempo and catchy melody of the song suggest that there's still hope for finding joy and pleasure amidst the chaos.

So it's a sunny Saturday morning in May 2022 and this album came out 18 years ago, and I really just wanted to communicate to the band that THIS ALBUM IS MAKING ME SMILE A LOT RIGHT NOW as it has done every time I've listened to it in the intervening years. THANK YOU.

This song sounds a little bit like Oingo Boingo and XTC had a child together.
@Astley
Great song!! This band should have been huge!

11 year late reply... I don't think the public could handle the constant sad reminder that dogs die in hot cars. Perhaps the band name was a hindrance to success. Love them even now.
@thebasilisks
