Wetsuit
The Vaccines Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If at some point we all succumb
For goodness sake, let us be young
'Cause time gets harder to outrun
And I'm nobody, I'm not done
With a cool, cool breeze and dirty knees
I rest on childhood memories
We all got old at breakneck speed
Slow it down, go easy on me

Go easy on me
Ah
Ah
Ah

Put a wetsuit on, come on, come on
Grow your hair out long, come on, come on
Put a T-shirt on, do me wrong, do me wrong, do me wrong

If it's up and after you
What do you suppose that you would do?
You're all whacked out from lack of sleep
You blame it on the friends you keep
Well, you wanna do things differently
Go do them independently
We all got old at breakneck speed
Slow it down, go easy on me

Go easy on me
Ah
Ah
Ah

Put a wetsuit on, come on, come on
Grow your hair out long, come on, come on
Put a T-shirt on, do me wrong, do me wrong, do me wrong
Put a wetsuit on, come on, come on
Grow your hair out long, come on, come on
Put a T-shirt on, do me wrong, do me wrong, do me wrong

Does holy water make you pure?
Submerged, your vision's just obscured
You're a lot like me
In up to our knees
In over your chest is way too deep

So put a wetsuit on, come on, come on
Grow your hair out long, come on, come on
Put a T-shirt on, do me wrong, do me wrong, do me wrong
Put a wetsuit on, come on, come on
Grow your hair out long, come on, come on
Put a T-shirt on, do me wrong, do me wrong, do me wrong

Overall Meaning

The Vaccines' song Wetsuit captures the essence of growing up, while also pointing out the importance of slowing down and not taking life too seriously. The opening lines set the tone of the song, urging listeners to embrace youthfulness even in the face of challenges. The lyrics "For goodness sake, let us be young, 'Cause time gets harder to outrun" remind us that youth has a time limit, and we should make the most of it while we can.

The use of childhood memories throughout the verses also speaks to the idea of nostalgia and holding onto the past. The lines "With a cool, cool breeze and dirty knees, I rest on childhood memories" highlight the importance of holding onto our memories, especially as we get older and they become more distant.

The chorus serves as a call to action, with the repetition of "Put a wetsuit on, come on, come on, Grow your hair out long, come on, come on, Put a T-shirt on, do me wrong, do me wrong, do me wrong" serving to encourage listeners to let go of their inhibitions and live a little. The final lines about holy water and being submerged in deep water serve as a metaphor for the struggles of life and encourage listeners to face their fears head-on.

I saw The Vaccines live for the first time this year, and hearing this song live was absolutely incredible. The “Put a wersuit come on come on” section have me goosebumps. I hope I can see them live again soon 🤞

@beth4692

They’re top of my list to see live “we all got old at breakneck speed” “you’re all lacked out from lack of sleep you blame it on the friends you keep” are two of my fav lyrics but there’s not a song they’re made I don’t like

@padraigmurphy3785

I first listened to this song in 2012 and watched this video at the same time.. I had no idea that the nostalgia would be so turbulent four years later. I'm 19 now and things have definitely changed since I was 15. The Vaccines, Arctic Monkeys and Noah and the Whale will always mean the most towards my mid-teens

I will never forget this song

@KidErkwon

You always see kids complaining that current music is crap and they'd rather have grown up in X time. Cool to see you're not one of these, because if you listened to these bands growing up, you're lucky af

@GumaroRVillamil

you're still in your teens, it's nothing. come back when you're in your late 20's, holy hell...
