The Gate
Björk Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Transformed into a gate
Where I receive love from
Where I give love from
And I care for you, care for you
I care for you, care for you
Care for you, care for you
I care for you, care for you
Split into many parts
Splattered light beams into prisms
That will reunite
If you care for me, care for me
If you care for me, care for me
Care for me, care for me
And then I'll care for you, care for you
I care for you, care for you
I care for you, care for you
Care for you, care for you
Didn't used to be so needy
Just more broken than normal
Proud self-sufficiency
My silhouette is oval
It is a gate
I can care for you, care for you from
I can care for you, care for you
I care for you, care for you
I care for you, care for you
I care for you, care for you
You care for me, care for me
Care for you
Björk's song "The Gate" talks about her transformation after suffering a chest injury, which leads her to a new understanding of herself and her ability to give and receive love. The lyrics describe her healed chest wound transformed into a gate that allows her to receive and give love. She talks about caring for someone and the reciprocity that comes with it. The song's central theme is the power of unconditional love, which can transcend physical pain and create a relationship that is mutually beneficial.
Björk introduces us to the idea that we all require care at some point and must also provide compassion and care for others. This message is reinforced when she sings about her split self, and how it reunites with the help of the prisms of light. Light passing through the gate represents the process of receiving and giving love as it transforms one's emotional self in profound ways. In the final verse, Björk tells us that none of us are exempt from our need for care, hence the idea that her silhouette became an oval gate, open to everyone who seeks and receives care.
Overall, "The Gate" can be interpreted as a symbol of enlightenment, where an individual can find peace and love beyond themselves. Björk has created a beautiful song that reflects the human experience and the strength that love can provide.

I love the fact that the latest Björk works are not "easy listening". You have to welcome it to your heart, breath, close your eyes and then feel every note flowing through your ears. It's not just a melody, it's a sentiment!
