Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way
Carl Smith Lyrics

To set your little old heart on fire
Do the things that lovers always do
So put your little hand in mine
I'll buy a diamond ring so fine
Then I'll build a bungalow for two
Closer, a little closer
Well, there ain't no use to stay so far away
So, darling, turn on all your charm
While I hold you in my arms
Let old Mother Nature have her way
Now my, baby, take a chance
'Cause I'm a-achin' for romance
I know that you were meant for me to love
You know your heart is beatin' fast
You know I'm a-gonna win at last
So cuddle up and be my turtle dove
Closer, a little closer
Well, there ain't no use to stay so far away
I'd like to touch your lips to mine
I'd like to win your love divine
Let old Mother Nature have her way
Closer, a little closer
There ain't no use to stay so far away
'Cause, baby, when I hold your hand
I feel just like a grown up man
Mother Nature says now that's the way
Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way is a romantic country song performed by Carl Smith in 1951. The singer of the song expresses his ardent admiration for his lover and proposes to her. He promises to shower her with love and affection, buy her a diamond ring, build a bungalow for two, and fulfill all the desires of a couple in love. He encourages her to come closer and dance with him while he holds her in his arms. He insists that they let Mother Nature take its course and let love blossom without any inhibitions.
The song is an apt representation of the post-war period when romantic love and relationships were prioritized. The lyrics highlight the values of traditional romance where the man initiates and proposes, and the woman is expected to respond positively. The reference to "Mother Nature" signifies a natural attraction between the two individuals who come together in love. The song is an expression of a man's unbridled love and desire for his beloved, with no holds barred.

As a kid, my dad played a compilation LP with songs from Ray Price, Carl Smith and Lefty Frizell. This was one of my favorites. I still have it and will throw it on the record player in my cellar when I’m down there working on something. Great song!
