Pumped Up Kicks
Foster the People Lyrics

He'll look around the room, he won't tell you his plan
He's got a rolled cigarette
Hanging out his mouth he's a cowboy kid
Yeah found a six shooter gun
In his dad's closet, oh in a box of fun things
I don't even know what
But he's coming for you, yeah he's coming for you
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
Daddy works a long day
He be coming home late, and he's coming home late
And he's bringing me a surprise
'Cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice
I've waited for a long time
Yeah the sleight of my hand is now a quick pull trigger
I reason with my cigarette
And say your hair's on fire, you must have lost your wits, yeah
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
The lyrics to this song, Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People, present a disturbing narrative of a young boy, Robert, who has access to a gun and plans to use it on his classmates. The first verse describes Robert's preparation as he smokes a rolled cigarette and finds a six-shooter gun in his dad's closet. The chorus then warns the listener that all the other kids with "pumped up kicks" better run faster than Robert's gun. In the second verse, we learn that the singer's father works long hours and brings home a surprise, dinner packed in ice. The singer has been waiting a long time and has now become the one with the "quick pull trigger," reasoning with his cigarette and accusing someone of "losing their wits."
It's almost impossible to miss the warning and frightening thoughts behind these lyrics, that someone is going to perform an act of violence. The phrase "pumped up kicks" likely refers to designer footwear that is considered trendy and popular, but the song portrays them in a more ominous light - as a symbol of privilege and a target for violence.

@jayit’s about a kid named Robert that I’m sure is bullied and ignored finding his dads gun and imagining kids running from him him fear. You break down and interpret that how ever you would like but I would say it’s about mass shootings more specifically school shootings and bullying. Sad really. Great fucking song though
