Tried And True
Ween Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

At the dawn, I woke, I was alone, rising
I called you on, the force, of time and space, calling
And as she came, to me, I fell back down, realizing
Oh that it's cool, for you, to love me now, I'm everything

Everything, 'cause tried, and true, I see the light in you
Oh han you dig in my soul, could you smell my whole, life?

You bent the edge, eclipsed, and turned around, aligning
And though the dark, sparked rays of violet light, blinding
I went about, the job, of sowing thoughts, and feelings
Oh some were good, some bad, I felt the cries, of healing

'Cause tried and true, I see the light in you
Oh can you dig in my soul, could you smell my whole, life?

Rise, my Dawn, you've been awake too long
Let me rest in time, while I blow your mind

At the dawn, I woke, I was alone, rising (I got ya)
I called you on, the force, of time and space, calling (see them)
And as she came, to me, I fell back down, realizing (creation)
that it's cool, for you, to love me now, I'm everything (I am)

Everything,'cause tried and true, I see the light in you
Can you dig in my soul, could you smell my whole, life?

Overall Meaning

The Ween song "Tried And True" is a dreamy, surrealistic ballad that centers around the singer's relationship with an unknown person. The song begins with the singer waking up alone at dawn and calling out to their partner through the "force of time and space." As their partner arrives, the singer falls back down, realizing that they have everything they need now that they are loved. The chorus repeats the phrase "tried and true," which is a testament to the strength and stability of their relationship. The singer then expresses a desire for their partner to "dig in [their] soul" and truly understand them.

As the song progresses, the imagery becomes more abstract, and the singer describes moments of healing and growth. The line "I went about the job of sowing thoughts and feelings" suggests that the singer is actively working on improving themselves, and some of these efforts are met with success ("some were good"). However, there are also moments of pain and struggle, as the singer "felt the cries of healing."

The song ends with the singer addressing their partner directly, urging them to rest and offering to "blow [their] mind." Overall, "Tried And True" is a poignant exploration of love, growth, and self-discovery.

I had never heard of Ween or this song until I heard it on Superman and Lois tonight. I immediately had to come and look it up. Kudos to the producers of S and L for putting amazing songs like this on the show's soundtrack. Ween now has a new fan.

That Bizarro origin scene was absolutely amazing

Same here! The Bizarro theme 😊

@jorgecardoso2184

Am I the only one that have always felt pity for Bizarro? This intro has cemented my feelings for this character even more. Always seen as the Villain nevertheless all he is ever wanted is hapiness for himself. He is always believed he is been stolen everything from him and is the only reason why he is always full of rage.

I like the "could you smell my hole... life" line, because it shows even in their more emotional songs, the band can slip a bit of humor in there. Laughter and humor can be a way of coping with sadness, and I think the way Ween can combine emotions like this adds even more depth to their songs

@shannahgothard3401

Perfectly said! In addition to the laughter..it's kina nasty...If dedicated as a Love song? Could you smell my w...(hole) life... Myself? I'd be a bit red in the face.
Ween is my all time favorite band..and every passenger in my car, subject to my cd player back in the day deemed me a freak.
