Low Five
Sneaker Pimps Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It takes too much to please me
attached but no real feeling
high fives and corporate anthems
nothing comes to mind

kitemarked for true low standards
where more wants all and no less
just change with no real progress
nothing comes to mind
i want higher
still nothing comes to mind

give me a low five
'cause i can't help myself
i'm a low five downsize no-one else
do you love yourself ?

these altered states and egos
potential less than zero
found god in san diego
nothing comes to mind

i half expect to find myself
in full control of nothing else
last hope but learnt to hope less
nothing comes to mind
i want higher
still nothing comes to mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sneaker Pimps' song "Low Five" are a commentary on the modern corporate world and consumer society. The singer expresses a sense of disillusionment and dissatisfaction with the superficiality and emptiness of this world, which is epitomized by "high fives and corporate anthems" that offer no real connection or meaning. The phrase "kitemarked for true low standards" suggests that society has become accustomed to accepting mediocrity and settling for less, while "more wants all and no less" implies a constant craving for more material possessions and status symbols.

The singer longs for something more meaningful and fulfilling, but finds that "nothing comes to mind." The repeated refrain of "still nothing comes to mind" emphasizes the sense of futility and hopelessness in this quest. The desire for something "higher" reflects a search for spiritual or emotional enlightenment, but this too remains elusive.

The chorus of the song, "give me a low five, 'cause I can't help myself," is ironic in that it suggests a willingness to settle for less, even though the singer is aware of the limitations and shortcomings of the current state of things. The line "do you love yourself?" implies a sense of self-doubt and insecurity, as if the singer is questioning their own motivations and desires.

Overall, the lyrics to "Low Five" convey a sense of disillusionment and frustration with modern society, while also expressing a desire for something more meaningful and authentic.

This album changed my life. It's so well done from start to finish.

Same here. It was about 22-23 years ago, I was hanging around a local street market which sold pirated music, and stumbled upon a cassette that said "Sneaker Pimps - Splinter, Alternative Electronic Music". The band's name appeared vaguely familiar (from the collaboration with Marilyn Manson, as I later recalled), but the main reason I decided to buy that album was its cover. The back of someone's head with a strange haircut, somehow I thought that was intriguing enough. I remember putting that cassette in my Walkman on my way home... I was captivated from the first sound. It was totally different from anything I've ever heard before. The music, the voice, the mood... Strange, eerie, beautiful, haunting... My English was very poor back then so I had a bit of a hard time understanding the lyrics and couldn't appreciate their originality and poetry as much as I can now. Nevertheless, I felt connected to these songs, and I still do. I like IAMX and pretty much everything Chris Corner does, but Splinter forever holds a special place in my heart.

Dude. This is horrible, simple, and just plain sucks.
Would you like a list of ten bands to check out that are ACTUALLY GOOD?
Becoming X is the only thing worth talking about from SP.
