On this day in 1957 {December 29th} Chuck Berry began a two day recording session at the Chess Studios in Chicago, Illinois... One of the songs recorded was "Guitar Boogie"; it would be track six of side one on his second studio album, 'One Dozen Berrys', and amazingly the album did not make either Billboard's Pop or R&B Albums chart... The song wasn't released as a single, but two others recorded at the sessions were; "Sweet Little Sixteen" {peaked at #2} and "Johnny B. Goode" {reached #8}... And, God willing, come next October 18th {2016} Charles Edward Anderson Berry will celebrate his 90th birthday... Here's the best of wishes to the 'Father of Rock 'n Roll'....

This is a great guitar boogie... Jeff Beck and many more...
eldorado62
All the great work that this man recorded back in the 1950's, & his only number one hit was "My Ding A Ling".........it's beyond comprehension!
JGC
eldorado62 ‘sweet little sixteen’ kept out of #1 Feb-1958 by Elvis Presley’s great record ‘Don’t’ and the Champs ‘Tequila’

I just realized something... the Yardbirds' song "Jeff's Boogie" is a reworking of this song, with proto-metal guitar solos instead.

With some of Cliff Gallup’s riffs from “Cruisin’l thrown in.

Happy Birthday, Chuck Berry!

I swear if I could grow my hair back, I'd "conk" it down, sell my car for the cash to buy a vintage Gibson hollowbody electric, and become the world's first Chuck Berry impersonator. My wife says the hair'd make me undateable, but IMO I'd do great in Vegas in a '50s rock revue show...she did have a very solid point when she burst my bubble and said, "Look, there's only ONE Chuck Berry, and brother, you AIN'T him!"
Tony Jones
***** I was wherever people are before they are born...in my case, I would have still had seven years' worth of heels-cooling to do...in the netherworld, LOL. The problem I have is baldness, serious baldness, since I'm pretty sure my wife would adjust to yet another stunt like becoming a Chuck Berry impersonator. Maybe I'll get some kind of wig?
Tony Jones
***** well, everybody needs a gimmick and I have NO future as a shredder, but suddenly I figure I'm just a few hairs (courtesy of a decent headrug) away from world domination lol

Great rewrite of the Arthur Smith number of a decade earlier!!!
MyTwangyGuitar
AllBobsAllTheTime You are clueless. The only thing this has in common is a I IV V chord progression.
Porkadillo
This has nothing to do with Arthur Smith. "Guitar Boogie" was a very generic name for this kind of number and Arthur Smith was by no means the first to record a track with that name.
AllBobsAllTheTime
Hence "Great rewrite ..."
Porkadillo
@AllBobsAllTheTime rewrite implies this is a cover. It's not. Not every song called "Guitar Boogie" is related to every another. As I said, it was a common name.
AllBobsAllTheTime
No it doesn't - it's a rewrite which Chuck did very well on numerous occasions.

I was noticing and liking the over-driven tube amp distorted tone on the guitar, way before fuzz pedals, or "gain" control knobs on amps were around. Just the older, smaller amps up full.

Great!

@McDaddy1959 I have before. It was awesome! It was him and Little Richard opened for him. It was almost surreal.

"jeff's Boogie" is a whole lotta improvement.

Nice one. PUt this on on 1,25 speed and it is more similar though

...except that the Yardbirds STOLE it - and took out the beautiful, lilting SWING! Jeff fries the fretboard on it, though,

@Alsurf89 Aww, Thanks so much :) :)
I'm glad you like this song =)

Good old day's.

the Yardbirds renamed this "Jeff's Boogie", with their names listed as composers, a practice their descendants, Led Zeppelin, know all too well - it's called stealing.

@MrDJCrazyDiamond Country is in part , influenced by Blues music
and "American folk" encompasses a wide variety of music genres

"Daddy Daddy,,, I know where "Jeff's Boogie " came from today!!!!"
MrDJCrazyDiamond
@bretadounitedfc to a certain degree yes but no. You can hear by the way he plays that Chuck has a lot of American folk and country roots. But there is a reason why a lot of latin music is called aftro-cuban and it makes sense that the music leading to what we know as rock and roll was called race music.

Ferget it...this is very complex music. He messes with the rhythms constantly, strange phrasing. Uses 3rds a lot. And yup, I heard "Jeff's Boogie" when it came out; didn't realize how much of that he got from this. Not many artists create their own world; Chuck did.
