Coma Girl
Joe Strummer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was crawling through a festival way out west
I was thinking about love and the acid test
But first I got real dizzy with a real rocking gang
And then I saw the Coma Girl and the excitement gang

And the rain came in from the wide blue yonder
Through all the stages I wandered

Oh, Coma Girl and the excitement gang
Mona Lisa on a motorcycle gang
Coma Girl
Coma Girl

Coma Girl was beating with the oil drum gang
Some fast food fanatic was burning down a burger van
Somebody was wailing off their head, oh
Nobody was ripping the teen scene dead

And the rain came in from the wide blue yonder
I thought you and me might wander

Oh, Coma Girl and the excitement gang
Mona Lisa on a motorcycle gang
Coma Girl
Coma Girl on a motorcycle gang

As the nineteenth hour was falling upon Desolation Row
Some outlaw band had the last drop on the go
Let's siphon up some gas, let's get this show on the road
Said the Coma Girl to the excitement gang

Into action everybody sprang
The oil drums were beating out dulang, dulang

Coma Girl and the excitement gang
Oh, Mona Lisa on a motorcycle gang
Coma Girl (dulang, dulang)
Coma Girl (dulang, dulang)

Mona, baby
Mo-Mona, baby (dulang, dulang)
Mona, baby
Mo-Mona, baby (dulang, dulang)

Hey-ho, yeah-ho, let it roll
(Dulang, dulang)
(Dulang, dulang)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros's song Coma Girl describe the experience of the singer at a festival way out west. The singer starts by thinking about love and the acid test, but then gets caught up in the excitement of the moment, with a real rocking gang and Coma Girl at the center of it all. The rain comes in from the wide blue yonder, and the singer wanders through all the stages, watching as Coma Girl and her excitement gang beat drums and ride motorcycles, while fast food fanatics burn down burger vans and somebody wails off their head. The excitement builds as the nineteenth hour falls upon Desolation Row, and the Coma Girl and her gang decide to siphon up some gas and get the show on the road.

The lyrics are somewhat surreal, painting a picture of a wild and chaotic scene where anything can happen. The Coma Girl herself is something of an enigma, seeming to lead the excitement gang in their adventures. The use of vivid imagery, such as the rain coming in from the wide blue yonder, and the sound of oil drums beating out dulang, dulang, adds to the almost dreamlike quality of the song. Overall, the lyrics suggest a kind of embrace of life's unpredictability and excitement, and a willingness to go along for the ride, even if it means getting caught up in the chaos.

I remember towards the end of 2001 or 2002, whenever it was, Joe was touring the UK and playing some really nice small venues, like the Concorde 2 in Brighton. In the end I couldn't get it together to go, "I'll catch him on the next one" I said to myself....

Obviously, that didn't happen. But I learned some very good life lessons that I'm sure Joe would approve of:

Do it now!
Don't put it off!
Dont put anything off!
The time is now!
Put off the unimportant things!
Prioritise!
If not now, when?!
Why not now?
DO IT NOW!

You never know when your opportunities will disappear.

Joe was one of the truest good guys there ever was, always remembered.

The late 90s and early 00's were a funny time for music. If he was still around now, he would be back to playing two nights in a row at Brixton Academy again like the Clash used to, and Joe and The Clash would be much more well known too.

I'm still waiting for the Clash to get the true recognition they deserve outside of the small minority that has already got the memo

I feel sorry for the guy/girl who hears this and is so disgusted that they have to tell people they don’t know about it. Weird.
