Arcade Fire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the middle of the summer
im not sleeping
cold wind blowing
in the middle of the night
they try to find me but im still driving
if your going to San Francisco
lay some flowers on the grave stone
theres music on the station and im just listening to cold wind whistling
and if they ever find me tell the papers cold wind cold wind
cold cold wind blowing
cold wind blowing
Hey hey hey
something aint right
something aint right
and if they ever find me tell the papers cold wind cold wind
cold cold wind blowing cold wind blowing cold wind blowing
cold wind blowing cold wind blowing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to “Cold Wind” by Arcade Fire present a sense of restlessness and discomfort, with the singer unable to find peace even in the middle of summer. The image of a cold wind blowing, even in the heat of the season, conveys a sense of ominousness and unease. The singer is evidently trying to escape from something, or someone, represented by the repeated refrain, “if they ever find me tell the papers cold wind cold wind.”

The mention of driving and heading to San Francisco suggest a kind of flight or escape, while the idea of laying flowers on a gravestone implies a sense of loss or mourning. These may be linked to the singer’s restlessness and discomfort, as they may be trying to escape from something painful or traumatic. The use of “they” to refer to the people looking for the singer also contributes to a sense of paranoia and fear. The song’s repeated use of the phrase “something ain’t right” further emphasizes the singer’s sense of unease and foreboding.

It’s 2022 and I’m rewatching entire series. I feel the same way I did when I watched it in 2008 and I’m happy it didn’t change. This is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and I’ll love it forever

This was the 1st show that actually made me cry. Nate was my guy from the start to the finish 😭

Wait until you realize you only can watch it start to finish so many more times in YOUR life…. Even if you have like time for 10 more times, I felt a little tear when I realized even me watching Six Feet Under fades to white 🥹🙂♥️♥️

@MisTTwisted

Watched it for the first time in 2017 and then again in 2020. It even hit me harder the second time. I'm thinking of watch it again. I guess I'll just watch it every 3-4 years or so, it's long enough to make you forget a lot of things from the show so it kinda feels fresh.

For reasons that I can't explain, this song struck a positive cord with me and made me cry. I'm a 60 year old man and it takes a lot for me to cry. I can't remember the last time that I cried. Thank you to the Six Feet Under crew and the original uploader. You have done me a great favor.
