Wish the World Awake
Black Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your life
Is like free to fly,
If feeling it is wrong
I don't ever want to feel it right.

It could almost be so,
It is sure to be so
Sensational.
My prayer

Is seldom heard
Ease into my arms
And whisper liquid words of love.
It could give you everything

That you want it to,
If you want it to.
If only you would jump on board,
Ride the train of thought,

Wish the world awake.
If only you could break the line,
You could learn this time and
Wish the world awake.

I close my eyes.
(Get up, get up, get up, get up, get up,
Wish the world awake)
(Get up, get up, get up, get up, get up,

Wish the world awake)
She gave
And gave of herself
'Til there was nothing left

And got down on her knees and prayed.
Prayed for an angel to fill her empty soul,
Do angels come so big?
I don't think so.

If only you would jump on board,
Ride the train of thought,
Wish the world awake.
If only you could break the line,

If only you could learn this time,
Wish the world awake.
(If only you would jump on board)
Ride the train of thought,

Wish the world awake.
(If only you could break the line)
If only you could learn this time,
We could wish the world awake.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Wish the World Awake" by Black portray a sense of longing and reflection. The first verse talks about someone's life being free to fly and how feeling it wrong would be better than feeling it right. This suggests that the person may have experienced something negative in their life and would rather embrace it than pretend it didn't happen. In the second verse, the singer talks about whispering "liquid words of love" and how it could give someone everything they want if they were willing to embrace it. The repeated refrain of "wish the world awake" suggests that the singer is hoping for a positive change in the world, but it will take effort from everyone to make it a reality.

The third verse takes a different tone, speaking about someone who gave everything of themselves until there was nothing left. This person prays for an angel to fill their empty soul, but the singer questions whether angels can really do that. The repeated refrain brings the song back around to the idea that we can all help to bring positive change to the world if we are willing to work for it.

Overall, "Wish the World Awake" is a call for action, for people to embrace their lives and be open to love and change, and to work towards a better world.

As all his fans painfully know, Colin was tragically taken from us on 26 January 2016.

But he left a legacy with such a huge back catalogue of great songs, recorded performances & memories; he was a master of the #LoveSong - whether a high energy rouser or the slowest of #ballads; he had his trademark voice - often described as "silky smooth" or #VelvetVoice; and he was such a lovely bloke who never strayed too far from his roots, just his record companies' demands.

Colin never had the wider appreciation & commercial success his talent deserved, but his many dedicated fans know he is a truly great #SingerSongwriter, one of the very best of his (& our) generation.

As an #InMemorian #InMemory tribute, I have been pulling together some of Colin's favourites & the fans' - your - favourites, and posting them via #Twitter using the following hashtags:

#ColinVearncombe (that unusual name he thought was a cross to bear, now an advantage!)
#Black #JustMakingMemories

It would be great if you shared your very favourite tracks & videos as part of the tribute.

On the #anniversary of his death (26/1/2016) & the anniversary of his beautiful #MemorialService at the #Liverpool Anglican Cathedral (19/2/2016), it would be a fitting tribute for us to share these two videos on your social media:

#BlackIsTheColourOfHope (dedicated to Colin by Chris McDonald & Rod Da Rosa)

#WonderfulLife (the song he fell in & out of love with but was proud of at the end)

As in the song sung so beautifully at Colin's Memorial Service by Chris & Rod:

"I just felt so cheated you were taken too soon...tonight a thousand voices will be crying out for you...because you made Black the colour of hope...you keep playing on for us, so we'll keep playing on for you".

Margo

His voice is a rare brilliant. I can listen to it eternally.
