Give me a word
Give me a sign
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find?
What will I find?
Lay me on the ground
Or fly me in the sky
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find?
What will I find?

(Yeah)
(Yeah)
(Yeah)

Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down

Love is in the water
Love is in the air
Show me where to look
Tell me will love be there?
Will love be there?
Teach me how to speak
Teach me how to share
Teach me where to go
Tell me will love be there?
Will love be there?

(Yeah)
(Yeah)
(Yeah)

Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down

Give me a word
Give me a sign
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find?
What will I find?
Lay me on the ground
Or fly me in the sky
Show me where to look
Tell me what will I find?
What will I find?

(Yeah)
(Yeah)
(Yeah)

Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down
Whoa, Heaven let your light shine down

I'm gonna let it shine
I'm gonna let it shine
Heaven send a light, let it shine on me
Hey yeah
Hey yeah
Heaven send a light, let it shine on me
(Shine)
Shine on me
(Shine)
Well come on and shine

Overall Meaning

Collective Soul's song "Shine" is a plea for guidance, love, and understanding from a higher power. The chorus repeatedly begs for "Heaven to let [its] light shine down," indicating that the singer is in a dark place and looking for a way out. The first verse asks for direction with the lines "Give me a word/Give me a sign/Show me where to look/Tell me what will I find?" The second verse shifts to a desire for love and connection, with the lines "Love is in the water/Love is in the air/Show me where to look/Tell me will love be there?" The final verse returns to the plea for guidance, echoing the first verse's questions.

The use of the word "Heaven" implies a religious or spiritual context, but the song's lyrics do not point towards any specific religion or faith. Instead, it seems to be more of a general call for help and hope from whatever form of divinity a person believes in. The repetition of the chorus, with its driving guitar riff and catchy "whoa" vocals, creates a sense of urgency and catharsis that makes the song popular with audiences.

My 3 year old son had been diagnosed with an aggressive brain stem tumor, medulloblastoma, in 1993. He and his two-year old sister LOVED this song, jumping on the bed and yelling out the chorus "Wooohhh" as I played it over and over in late 1993 and early 1994. He passed in February, 1994 but I'll never forget this song as it made him imminently happy in his last days!!
