Turn It Off
Phantogram Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got your name
Got your notebook
Cellphone look
Population
An invitation to die
And all the faces
Mopeds can't collide
It's fascination
And it will eat you alive

Me I'm no stranger to the law and no I won't abide
I've got my handcuffs
Mouth taped
Suicide eyes
And all the faces
Gracious
Look up to the sky
This is the way of the world
Weight of the world makes me cry

I could have been easier on you
I should have been a little bit easier on you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Phantogram's song Turn It Off paint a picture of a world overrun with technology and a society that is suffocating under the weight of it all. The first verse refers to the invasion of privacy with the mention of the notebook and cellphone look. The following line highlights the idea of overpopulation and how it ultimately leads to death, maybe not physical death but a death of human connection and interaction. The imagery of mopeds unable to collide emphasizes how disconnected and self-absorbed society has become. The last line of the verse is a warning of sorts - the fascination with technology and the way in which it dominates our lives will eventually consume us whole.

The second verse introduces the idea of rebellion and individuality in the face of this technological onslaught. The singer is "no stranger to the law" and balks at the idea of conforming. The description of mouth taped and suicide eyes, along with the line "This is the way of the world, weight of the world makes me cry" reveal how overwhelming it all can be - the constant push to conform and fit in, while still maintaining a sense of self, can be exhausting. The final line of the song, "I could have been easier on you, I should have been a little bit easier on you" speaks to the regret the singer feels for not being able to help those who have been consumed by technology.

Overall, the song is a commentary on the obsession with technology and how it has affected society, and the internal struggle individuals face when trying to remain true to themselves amidst the chaos.

There are live things on this site that would make you hate yourself for typing that lol

@jamesc4196

I agree. I saw them maybe 10 or 11 years ago now, and their live versions of tracks synced with their cinematics on stage are seriously the best I’ve ever seen. I was a die hard fan. But they went from this kind of dark romantic tortured vibe (which I was all anout), into like a Brittney Spears thing and they lost me lol...

This and their song “Intro” were absolutely fucking incredible.

10/10 I really miss them!

@SWalkr

After all these years, this rendition of this song is still the best. Awesome.
