Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me that you turned down the man
Who asks for your hand
'Cause you're waiting for me
And I know, you're gonna be away a while
But I've got no plans at all to leave
And would you take away my hopes and dreams?
And just stay with me, ooh

All my senses come to life
While I'm stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I'll never leave again
'Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you'll never leave again
'Cause you are the only one

Take my hand and my
Heart and soul, I will
Only have these eyes for you
And you know, everything changes but
We'll be strangers if, we see this through
You could stay within these walls and bleed
Or just stay with me, oh Lord now

All my senses come to life
While I'm stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I'll never leave again
'Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you'll always be a friend
'Cause you are the only one

Stumbling half drunk, getting myself lost
I am so gone, so tell me the way home
I listen to sad songs, singing about love
And where it goes wrong

All my senses come to life
While I'm stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I'll never leave again
'Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you'll always be a friend
'Cause you are the only one

Overall Meaning

In Ed Sheeran's song One, the singer tells the story of a relationship that is faced with external forces that threaten to tear the couple apart. The song speaks of the reassuring bond between two people in love, who are ready to fight for one another despite the challenges that they face. In the verses, Ed speaks about the potential for a third person entering into this relationship and taking the girl he loves away from him. He expresses his desire that she remains with him and chooses not to entertain other options. This fear of the possibility of losing her is what makes him seek reassurance of her love, prompting him to say, "just promise me you'll never leave again."

The chorus of the song speaks to the power of that bond between two people in love. Ed sings about how his senses "come to life" when he's with the girl he loves. Even when he's "stumbling home as drunk as I have ever been", he knows that she's the only one who can give him that feeling of being alive. He acknowledges that his friends have moved on and found other people, but promises to remain loyal to her. The song is a stirring declaration of love that captures the feeling of being so wholly devoted to somebody that everything else fades in comparison.

One of the saddest songs he's written. You can feel the pain in his voice. Also, the music video itself is so sad: empty stage, no one around, the echo in his voice, the lights.. so sad yet so beautiful. He's a powerful lyricist and a great artist.

Nice voice

@@hahahihi9252 I think it's about an ex-girlfriend and the emptiness he feels when she's not there. There should be some form of an explanation on the Internet though!

@kiyawhitworth1712

@@hahahihi9252 Personally, mabey not? I'm just thinking about the line "all my friends have gone to find another place to let their hearts collide." Which could be interpreted as leaving the protagonists to go and love each other; not including the protagonist (you.) The best song for that could possibly be "Bibia ye ye?"
