Jasmine Thompson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

And the walls came tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

Close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

If you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jasmine Thompson’s song “Pompeii” share a sense of hopelessness and uncertainty. The first verse details the singer being left alone with nothing to show for their time, inviting a sense of melancholy. The chorus suggests that one can escape this feeling of despair by simply closing their eyes and imagining things are the same as they were before, a somewhat hopeless sentiment of decline. The line “how am I gonna be an optimist about this?” highlights the resigned nature of the singer’s mindset.

The second verse seems to speak to a relationship, where the singer and partner were caught up and lost in their vices, and their activity has resulted in nothing but rubble and darkness. The line “The rubble or our sins?” weighed heavily, suggesting that both the destruction that has taken place and the singer’s own personal failings have led to the current situation. The chorus repeats, again suggesting that we can escape the despair by closing our eyes and imagining that things haven’t changed.

The city seems to be metaphorical in this song, representing a place where the singer has cherished memories, but has now lost all that matters to them. The darkness from above and walls tumbling down serve as an ominous reminder of the city’s inevitable decline, leaving the singer and their relationship in a state of uncertainty and hopelessness.

The original feels like a celebration during dark times. This feels like self reflection and trying to be happy and strong during the darkest period in one's life. Both versions sound different but they both have the same message that we should stand strong during hardships.
