Swingin Party
Lorde Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Somewhere there's a party
Here it's never ending
Can't remember when it started
Pass around the lampshade
There'll be plenty enough room in jail
If being wrong's a crime
I'm serving forever
If being strong's your kind
Then I need help here with this feather
If being afraid is a crime
We hang side by side
At the swingin' party down the line
Pound the prairie pavement
Losing proposition
Quitting school and going to work
And never going fishing
Water all around,
I never learned how to swim now
If being wrong's a crime
I'm serving forever
If being strong's your kind
Then I need help here with this feather
If being afraid is a crime
We hang side by side
At the swingin' party down the line
At the swingin' party down the line
Bring your own lampshade
Somewhere there's a party
Here it's never ending,
Can't remember when it started
Pass around the lampshade
There'll be plenty enough room in jail
If being wrong's a crime
I'm serving forever
If being strong is what you want
Then I need help here with this feather
If being afraid is a crime
We hang side by side
At the swingin' party down the line
At the swingin' party down the line
The lyrics to "Swingin Party" by Lorde talks about the various aspects of life and how each individual faces their own battles. In the beginning, the lyrics indicate the presence of a party, which seems to never end. The idea of bringing your own lampshade may symbolize bringing your own light or style to the party, rather than just fitting in with the crowd. The line "Can't remember when it started" implies a sense of lost time, the feeling of being lost in the moment. The next verse talks about the consequences of life choices that may result in imprisonment or social isolation, but it's also made clear that everyone has their own struggles, and we are all in this "swingin' party" called life together.
The chorus of the song conveys the idea of how people are judged for what they believe in or how they live their lives. The use of the feather as a symbol for weakness and need for help, juxtaposes with the idea of being imprisoned/bullied for being different. The lyrics "If being afraid is a crime/ We hang side by side/ At the swingin' party down the line" is a line that shows how we all have fears in life, but it's something that everyone relates to, and we can all come together in those moments.

I always listen to Lorde in Summer, when everything is free and calm and I can think and relax, usually we go to the old big house of my grandma which is very much like a farm, now she is selling it, and I am happy I've enjoyed that little freedom it gives that house.

taking a look back to this album before i turn 20 is such an experience.
listening to the songs specially to ribs and this one made me feel emotional. i’m about to enter a new chapter of my life which is adulthood. the fear of getting old and being alone makes me worry a lot, knowing that i’ve spent my childhood and teenage days being with the people that mean a lot to me.
