Pursuit of Happiness
Lissie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Crush a bit, little bit, roll it up, take a hi
Feelin' lit, feelin' light, 2 AM summer night.
I don't care, hand on the wheel, drivin drunk, I'm doin' my thing
Rollin the Midwest side and out livin' my life getting' out dreams
People told me slow my road I'm screaming out fuck that
I'm gonna do just what I want lookin' ahead no turnin' back
If I fall if I die, know I lived it to the fullest
If I fall if I die, know I lived and missed some bullets

I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know
Everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold
Hey, I'll be fine once I get it, I'll be good.

Tell me what you know about dreamin', dreamin'
You don't really know about nothin', nothin'
Tell me what you know about them night terrors every night
5 AM, cold sweats wakin' up to the skies
Tell me what you know about dreams, dreams
Tell me what you know about night terrors, nothin'
You don't really care about the trials of tomorrow
You rather lay awake in a bed full of sorrow

I’m on the pursuit of happiness and I know
everything that shines ain’t always gonna be gold
I’ll be fine once I get it, I’ll be good

I’m on the pursuit of happiness.
I know everything that shines ain’t always gold
I’ll be fine once I get it, I’ll be good

Hands on the wheel, fuck that
Hands on the wheel, get drunk
Hand on the wheel, fuck that
Hand on the wheel

Hands on the wheel, fuck that
Hands on the wheel, kick drum, high hat
Hand on the wheel, fuck that
Hand on the whee

I’m on the pursuit of happiness and I know
everything that shines ain’t always gonna be gold, hey
I’ll be fine once I get it, yeah, I’ll be good

I’m on the pursuit of happiness.
And I know everything that shines ain’t always gonna be gold, hey
I’ll be fine once I get it, yeah
I’ll be good

I’m on the pursuit of happiness and I know
everything that shines ain’t always gonna be gold, hey
I’ll be fine once I get it, yeah, I’ll be good ohhh hey, yeah yeah…

I’m on the pursuit of happiness

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lissie's song Pursuit of Happiness convey the desire of the singer to live their life on their own terms, despite the warnings and opinions of others. The first verse describes a rebellious and carefree attitude, with the singer "crushing" and "rolling up" a substance, driving drunk, and pursuing their dreams without hesitation. The second verse addresses the contrast between the pursuit of happiness and the darker aspects of life, such as night terrors and fear of the unknown. Despite this, the singer remains steadfast in their pursuit and unafraid to take risks. The repeating refrain emphasizes the idea that everything that shines is not always gold, and that the singer will ultimately be fine as long as they keep striving for their own happiness.

Overall, the lyrics of Pursuit of Happiness encourage listeners to prioritize their own happiness and not be swayed by outside opinions or fear of failure. The song is a celebration of individuality and self-determination, while acknowledging that the pursuit of happiness is not always a smooth or easy journey.

So we’ll put. I was trying to come t but ya’ll knocked it out of the park.

His original still gives me chills. If you were dealing with mental health anguish/addiction/s-word ideation/just overwhelmed circa 2010/11, you knew and swore by his song. I think history will co-sign it as one of the most important expressions of a specific kind of pain you had to be there like we were to get/understand.

So many layers too. Ethnicity, sexuality, struggles with substance abuse, the prison of male-masculine identity for some people, the feelings of inferiority you get in a world where everything is perfect or striving for perfection and on display and the gonzo toll it can take on all of our lives and minds, just seeing everybody else with their curated lives, cultivated to inspire envy and make one feel less than.

Think that’s why her version works so well, besides her very obviously real talent (“Best Days” is like a soul song for me): because the song adds layers or opens and reveals something entirely different depending on the person singing it.

But Scott will always have my heart for his. It never fails me/us.

@CoolHand-zn7zn

I have been listening to this version for a few years now and it is perfect. This was my song when I became a father in 2014 (pursuit of happiness) and when I heard this very specific version I became so attached. Like imprinting.
