Alabama
Cross Canadian Ragweed Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She picked up the telephone,
All the heard was dial tone.
She really thought she'd heard it ring this time.
She said, "what am I thinking?
I must be only dreaming.
Or maybe it's the hundred times he's crossed my mind just tonight."

Maybe I miss your loving.
Maybe I miss your kiss just a little bit.
Maybe I miss your body lying right next to mine.
Maybe I miss your touch a little too much.

Tossing and turning.
Her skins still burning
From the fire in his hands.
Running on empty.
She needs somebody,
But somebody wouldn't understand.
And the telephone rings.

Maybe I miss your loving.
Maybe I miss your kiss just a little bit.
Maybe I miss your body lying right next to mine.
Maybe I miss your touch a little too much.

Talked about Savannah,
Sweet Home Alabama,
And how I miss the way she always smiled.
Are you coming back soon
By the harvest moon
If I have to walk every mile on my knees.

Maybe I miss your loving.
Maybe I miss your kiss just a little bit.
Maybe I miss your body lying right next to mine.
Maybe I miss your touch a little to much.

Now maybe I miss your loving.
Maybe I miss your lips just a little bit.
Maybe I miss your body lying right next to mine.
Maybe I miss your touch a little too much.

A little too much.
A little too much.

Overall Meaning

The song "Alabama" by Cross Canadian Ragweed is a heartwrenching ballad about a woman who is feeling the weight of a past relationship on her shoulders. The first verse sets the scene with the woman picking up the phone and hearing only dial tone, leading her to believe she is only dreaming or imagining that the phone rang. She is consumed with thoughts of her ex-lover, feeling the pain of missing his touch, his body lying next to hers, and his affectionate kisses. The second verse mentions how much she needs someone to understand her pain and help her through it, but seemingly no one is around or available to do so. At the end of the verse, the phone rings again, perhaps bringing her a glimmer of hope that it could be her former lover reaching out to her.

The chorus emphasizes the depth of her longing, with her acknowledging that she might miss him too much. She reminisces about the good times they shared, mentioning Savannah and Sweet Home Alabama, and how she misses the way he used to make her smile. She even goes as far as to say that she would walk miles on her knees to see him again, showing just how deep her feelings for him run. The repetition of the chorus at the end of the song, with the added emphasis on how much she misses him, drives home just how much this relationship meant to her and how much she is struggling without it.

My first concert I ever went to was CCR, I got to go with my sister in 2005. This was her favorite song of all time. She passed away two years later at only 21 years old, and 16 years later I still feel her all around me whenever I play this song. It still brings me to tears all these years later. I hope they know how important to all of us the music that they made is, and all the memories we as fans associate with their music. 🖤

Jessica I relate to you and your story more than I’m willing to admit over YouTube. Hope you’re finding peace and turn those memories into treasures.

Im so sorry. If not for XM radio, I would have never heard of these guys..but the music gods can be benevolent. First three songs I heard after buying it was CCR "Fightin For", Mickey and the Motorcars "Rock Springs to Cheyenne" and Reckless Kelly "Nobody's Girl". I got angry--because commerical radio kept this music from us andI learned why-because it is superior to the shit they put out in Nashville. I miss CCR. If you look, there are almost 6 million views. For an unknown band supposedly, people know now. And I gotta say, the number of beautiful women at their shows was amazing. Cody is a great guy just to listen to talk about music with Jason Boland, Randy Rogers, Mike McClure and the rest.

@bluedoggy3239

One of the more underrated country bands out there for sure no doubt.

@bluedevil0704

They were not country. They were at most, Southern Rock or Alt-Country. They were a 100% straight up Rock Band that Nashville tried to pigeon hole into being a country band.

@jamieargent7139

For sure gotta be one of the best ever

@williamgosse851

This isn't a country band. Maybe folk & hippie jibberjab.
