That Old Feeling
Pee Wee Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night I started out happy
Last night my heart was so gay
Last night I found myself dancing
In my favorite cabaret
You were completely forgotten
Just an affair of the past
Then suddenly something happened to me
And I found my heart beating, oh, so fast

I saw you last night and got that old feeling
When you came in sight I got that old feeling
The moment that you danced by I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye my heart stood still
Once again I seemed to feel that old yearning
And I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
For that old feeling, is still in my heart

I saw you last night and got that old feeling
When you came in sight I got that old feeling
The moment that you danced by I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye my heart stood still
Once again I seemed to feel that old yearning
And I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
For that old feeling, is still in my heart

Overall Meaning

Pee Wee Russell’s song “That Old Feeling” is a wistful ballad that speaks to the idea that you can never entirely forget about a past love. The song is about the experience of seeing an old love by chance and the rush of emotions that come along with that experience. The lyrics describe a night out when the singer is having a good time and forgetting about the past, but then they see their old flame and all of their old feelings come rushing back. They feel a jolt of excitement and a sense of longing, and they realize that they still have feelings for their past love.

The song suggests that despite trying to move on and forget that past relationship, the memories and emotions that were once felt will always be present. The lyrics of the song are full of longing and melancholy as the singer comes to terms with the fact that even though they may try to move on, some part of them will always be in love with this past individual. The song speaks to the emotional turmoil of seeing an old flame and the difficulty of truly letting go of someone you once loved.

Overall, "That Old Feeling" is a beautiful and poignant ballad that captures the human experience of love and loss. The song speaks to the ways in which our past experiences shape us, and how it's often difficult to entirely let go of those feelings and memories.

@J-C Soulié: Do you seriously ask what Russell has invented? Just listen to jazz clarinet in general BEFORE his 1928 "Hello Lola" and "One Hour" and after. Together with Frank Teschmaker, Coleman Hawkins, Joe Smith, Bix Beiderbecke, and Frank Trumbauer he practically invented ballad playing, or romanticism in general, in jazz playing. Benny Goodman never acknowledged being influenced by Russell (Goodman's main influence was indeed Jimmy Noone), but in the late 20ies, he was caught watching Russell behind a pillar at a Russell concert, writing down what he heard. You can hear the Russell influence on Goodman on Goodman's records with Buck Clayton and Lester Young. Russell (plus Bud Freeman and Trumbauer) also laid the basis for Lester Young's romantic playing. If you dig deeper in Russell's chords you will see that he was one of the first modernists. It is not by chance that he could play with Giuffre and Monk.

Really good commentary and appreciation. I'm surprised that there have been no responses.

@Gordon Bainbridge I love Russell as a musical omnivore. He's the only musician who recorded with both Bix Beiderbecke and Thelonious Monk. In his last 20 years he made a lot of slapdash Dixieland records because they brought in the money, but music like this is where his heart truly laid.

Pee Wee at his pensive peak!

"The thin man of swing " Eddie Condon called him.
