Everywhere
Bran Van 3000 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As long as we're getting a bit technical,
I'd like to remind you that most women
And children can perceive higher frequencies
Of sound than most men.

Everywhere I see your faces,
Everywhere you sing your smile and,
Every time you're not around,
It doesn't matter,
'Cause you're everywhere to me.

Everyone you've ever known counts on you,
Waits for you,
To come through.
Don't you know that you're gonna break through?

And everywhere you came and left,
You came in the name of love and,
Left a wake of happiness and tenderness,
And sweet conflict, sweet conflict.

You hang around,
You come on down,
You come on down,
And it's on and on and on and on,
It's on.
It goes on.

You hang around,
You come on down,
But you don't come down.

Whispering,
Whispering,
Whispering your name.
You're everywhere, everywhere, everywhere,
To me.
Everywhere, everywhere, everywhere,
To me.

Calling,
Calling,
I'm calling your number,
Calling,
I'm calling your number,
Calling,
I'm calling your number,
Calling your number,
I'm calling your number,
Calling,
You're everywhere,
You're everywhere to me.
Everywhere to me.

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of the song opens on a technical note, explaining how women and children are more receptive to higher frequencies of sound than most men. The lyrics seem to suggest that this heightened sensitivity might explain how women and children are everywhere in the music and perhaps everywhere in the world, even when they're not physically present. The next stanza describes the ubiquity of the person the singer is addressing. The person is everywhere the singer goes, even when they're not physically present. The singer acknowledges that the addressee is a person others rely on and wait for, suggesting they might be important to many people.

The chorus that goes "everywhere you came and left, you came in the name of love and left a wake of happiness and tenderness, and sweet conflict, sweet conflict" seems to suggest that the addressee is a powerful or influential person who leaves a deep impact on those he/she interacts with. There is something bittersweet about their presence, and it causes people to experience a mixture of emotions, as described by the "sweet conflict" phrase. The chorus is repeated several times, with slight variations.

The final stanza is repetitive, as the singer calls out to the addressee and says they're everywhere to him/her. It is unclear whether this is a love song, but it seems to suggest that the person is highly regarded and influential in various ways. The lyric "Everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, to me" suggests that the person's presence transcends physical boundaries and limitations. The song leaves the listener with a sense of awe and wonder, as though the person the singer is describing is a force of nature that cannot be contained.

I was lucky enough to see them live in 1997. Those were the days of huge computers and big hair. I sure do miss the 90s.
