Strawberry Wine
Deana Carter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He was working through college
On my grandpa's farm
I was thirsting for knowledge
And he had a car
Yeah, I was caught somewhere between a woman and a child
One restless summer we found love growing wild
On the banks of the river on a well beaten path
It's funny how those memories they last
Like strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, oh bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

I still remember
When thirty was old
And my biggest fear was September
when he had to go
A few cards and letters and one long distance call
We drifted away like the leaves in the fall
But year after year I come back to this place
Just to remember the taste
Of strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, whoa-oh, bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

The fields have grown over now
Years since they've seen the plow
There's nothing time hasn't touched
Is it really him or the loss of my innocence?
I've been missing so much

Yeah

Strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, whoa-oh bittersweet
And green on the vine
Like strawberry wine and seventeen
The hot July moon saw everything
My first taste of love, oh, bittersweet
And green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

Strawberry wine
Ooh
Strawberry wine

Overall Meaning

The song “Strawberry Wine” by Deana Carter tells the story of a young woman remembering her first love that she met while working on her grandpa’s farm. She was in a transitional period, caught between being a child and a woman, and he was working through college. They fell in love during a restless summer on the banks of the river, where they first tasted love as bittersweet as green strawberries on the vine. The memory of their love stayed with her as she grew up, moved away, and time passed by. She returns year after year to the place where their love first bloomed just to remember the taste of their strawberry wine and the feeling of being seventeen once again. The song ends with the realization that the fields have grown over now, and maybe it’s not really him that she’s missing, but the loss of her innocence that he represents.

The lyrics of this song perfectly encapsulate the feeling of nostalgia and the longing for the innocence of youth that we all sometimes experience. The memory of first love and the feeling of being young and carefree can be bittersweet, and this song captures that feeling perfectly. The imagery of the hot July moon, the well-beaten path, and the green strawberries on the vine all help to create a vivid picture of the place where they first fell in love.

I met this girl through a wrong number I had called. I was trying to call my buddy Bob and ended up talking to this girl. We talked for hours and days passed and I forgot to get that girls number. One day out of the blue the phone rang, it was the girl I had talked to for hours a few days ago. This time I was smart enough to get her number............That was 43 years ago, two children and five grand children and all because of a wrong number! I don't know if it was fate but I'm sure glad it happened and I love her more every day, she can bring sunshine on the gloomiest of days and the happiness she brings me is unbelievable.
