The Hours
Beach House Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ahh
Ahh

Can I wait the hours 'til you find me?
Climb up to the tower so that you could see

Violence in the flowers where they found you
Can I wait the hours?
Would it be untrue?
Climb up to the tower so that you could see
All across the hours

Frightened eyes looking back at me
Change your mind, don't care about me
Frightened eyes looking back at me
Change your mind, don't leave without me
Frightened eyes

Made in your reflection so that you could feel
Mad in your intentions, fear it isn't real
All the recollections spinning in a field
Left in your possession 'til it isn't real
You say it isn't real

Frightened eyes looking back at me
Change your mind, don't care about me
Frightened eyes looking back at me
Change your mind, don't leave without me
Frightened eyes

It's deeper than you and me
It's farther than you could see
Is it too much to ask? Tell me
It's all in a glance, you'll see
It's deeper than you and me (Looking back at me)
It's all in a glance, you'll see (Don't care about me)
It's farther than we could be (Looking back at me)
It's deeper than you and me (Don't care about me)
Frightened eyes

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Beach House's "The Hours" speak of longing and the passage of time. The lyricist ponders whether they can wait for hours until the person they are yearning for finds them. The imagery of "climbing up to the tower so that you could see" highlights the idea of striving and going to great lengths to be noticed or discovered. The juxtaposition of "violence in the flowers where they found you" creates an unsettling feeling and hints at the possibility of danger or tragedy.

The second verse delves deeper into the singer's emotions, revealing that they are scared of being rejected or left behind. The repeated line "frightened eyes looking back at me" emphasizes the vulnerability of the singer and the uncertainty of the situation. The following lines suggest that the person they are waiting for is struggling with their own internal conflicts, as they are "made in your reflection so that you could feel" but "mad in your intentions, fear it isn't real."

The chorus repeats several times, urging the subject to "change your mind" and not leave without the singer. The final lines of "The Hours" plead for clarity and understanding, as the singer realizes that the situation is "deeper than you and me" and "farther than you could see."

oh my god I can't believe I found this now. I first heard it at a coffee shop and liked it. The guys at the counter had no idea, I had no idea, all I could remember is the "don't leave without me" part of the lyrics, and I finally found it.
