Che
Suicide Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Well Alright
came to say
let´s all prey
hurray hurray
Che che
He´s wearing a red star/
Smoking his cigar
And when he died/
The whole world lied
They said he was a saint/
But I know he ain´t
Che che hurray hurray
Hurray hurray che che
Che che hurray hurray hurray hurray
At first glance, Suicide's song Che may seem like a simple homage to the iconic Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. However, upon closer examination of the lyrics, it becomes clear that the song is making a deeper commentary about the way Che has been mythologized by the public, despite questionable actions during his life. The opening lines, "Che che/ Well Alright/ came to say/ let´s all prey," suggest a sense of celebration and praise for Che, as if he is a deity to be worshipped. However, the following lines, "He's wearing a red star/ Smoking his cigar/ And when he died/ The whole world lied," begin to shed light on the darker side of Che's image. The red star and cigar are symbols of communism and Che's role as a leader in the revolution, but the last two lines suggest that there may be more to Che's story that has been whitewashed by history. The idea that "the whole world lied" implies that Che's death and legacy were not accurately represented by those in power.
