Low-Flying Jets
Heatmiser Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't want to sit up straight
Or look you in the face
I keep checking over your shoulder
'Cause I've been dreaming of low-flying jets

Sweet town knocked my head over
Over and over
You got your head in the clouds
You can't hear me at all

And I don't know what to say
'Cause I don't know what's wrong
It's just a headache I suppose
Thrown back like a sinking boat

I keep thinking it's all over
'Cause I've been dreaming of undertows
And the places that you go
And my head slips off your shoulder

You got your head in the clouds
You can't hear me at all
And I don't know what to say
'Cause I don't know what's wrong

You can't hear me at all
Been staying up too late
I keep dreaming of lost in space
And when I wake up

I start to break up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Heatmiser’s “Low-Flying Jets” are reflective of a troubled relationship where the singer finds it difficult to communicate with their significant other. The opening lines suggest a desire to avoid confrontation by not sitting up straight or maintaining eye contact. The singer is preoccupied and distracted, checking over their partner’s shoulder while dreaming of low-flying jets. Whether it is a literal or metaphorical representation of their predicament, the image of low-flying jets signifies a feeling of danger, insecurity, and vulnerability. It likened to a veiled warning about a potential relationship breakdown.

The second verse describes how the singer’s infatuation with their partner caused them to lose their balance – “Sweet town knocked my head over, over and over” - but their partner is aloof and distant - “You got your head in the clouds, you can't hear me at all”. The singer is overwhelmed by their emotions but does not know how to express them. They feel incapacitated as if they are in a sinking boat, and they are struck by intense headaches. Throughout the song, the singer keeps indulging in their fantasy world. They dream of undertows and faraway places where they can escape their problems. They want to confide in their partner, but they feel ignored, perpetuating their feelings of frustration and confusion.

The lyrics in “Low-Flying Jets” are poetic and open to interpretation. However, they bring to mind the complexities and difficulties of communication in relationships. Even when two people care for each other deeply, sometimes there is a barrier that prevents them from communicating their feelings genuinely and honestly.

Woah thanks Rick and Morty, I have never heard of this guy before and wikipedia for giving me his album history. This stuff is dope. I loved nirvana and beck as a kid and this would have fit right in. Why do all the great songwriters die so young

It was a great album and a lot of Elliott's fans aren't aware of "Mic City Sons" as being one of his better efforts.

This is a great song though. Really heatmiser had matured by this stage. Neil Gust learnt so much about songwriting from Elliott by this stage and I say this song is one of the stronger song on the album. Neil Gust stuff is fantastic too. 😊
