I Got You
Jack Johnson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Back when all my little goals seemed so important
Every pot of gold feeling full of distortion
Heaven was a place still in space, not in motion
But soon

I got you
I got everything
I've got you
I don't need nothing
More than you
I got everything
I've got you

We went walking through the hills
Tryin' to pretend that we both know
Maybe if we save up
We could build a little home
But then the hell storm came and yelled
"You need to let go, you've got no control"
No

I got you
I got everything
I've got you
I don't need nothing
More than you
I got everything
I've got you

This weight's too much alone
Some days I can't hold it at all
You take it on for me
When tomorrow's too much
I'll carry it all, I got you

And when tomorrow's too much
I'll carry it all, I got you

I got you
I got everything
I've got you
I don't need nothing
More than you
I got everything
I've got you

Overall Meaning

The song "I Got You" by Jack Johnson is about the power of love and how it can give us strength and support in times of difficulty. The lyrics describe the singer's past struggles with goals that seemed important at the time, but were in reality distorted visions of success. He also talks about his past belief that heaven was a place in space, suggesting a spiritual questioning or crisis. However, in spite of these hardships, the singer has found someone (the "you" mentioned in the title) who gives him everything he needs and makes him feel complete.

The chorus repeats the lines "I got you, I got everything, I've got you, I don't need nothing more than you" three times, emphasizing the all-encompassing nature of the love the singer has found. The second verse finds the couple walking through the hills, dreaming of building a home together, but faced with forces beyond their control when a storm descends upon them. The bridge of the song finds the singer acknowledging that sometimes life's challenges feel too heavy to bear, but that his partner is there to help lighten the load. The song ends on a note of reassurance, with the singer promising to take on whatever life throws at them as long as he has his "you."

Overall, the lyrics of "I Got You" powerfully communicate the message that true love enables us to face life's challenges with strength and hope.

Each opportunity that came my way seemed to be unclear and not as great as it appeared

Heaven was a place still in space, not in motion
My idea of an ideal place was something still and far away, rather than something I could attain

On certain days, I am completely incapable of managing the weight I feel

Jack Johnson is the musical equivalent of a smile from a stranger. You know, when someone just randomly smiles and you think, "Hey, that was nice, maybe people don't suck, and the world can be OK if we work together."

:-)

@redskin_oi9968

@gus729

so damn accurate

@patsy6589

I agree whole heartedly

@luciac.419

Yes!! I agree. Keeps my mind positive. Just zrecently (yesterday) somebody I was talking with said "what did I do wrong?" & I thought no not "wrong" just OUR lines have run their course. If we can just let go of our anger at one another & frame things in a different perspective I'm pretty sure life would be more peaceful. I don't want to look at someone as "wrong" just not right for my right now. Listening to Jack Johnson always helps keep me feeling peaceful & magnanimous toward my fellow humans

I'm no expert but I believe that songs like these keep depression away.

@chrisschneider2432

Or relieve them. 🤙🏻

@cindyray44

Definitely help depression

@morplagro1545

One of the things I did to overcome mine was listen to happier music, a lot of Jack Johnson. So, in my experience, yes! 😁
