Too Much Brandy
The Streets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Smell of good earthy herbs makes my nerves shudder
But where were you that cold December
'Cause we were in the grasshopper spending guilders
Central station, charged up like Scarface
Amsterdam ain't a nice place off your face, we enter the race
Walk down, been there before, done that, no joy if you're bored

Let's go see Roy, get fucked up with the boys
Calvin, Schmalvin, I'm well within my limit, oh hang on a minute
These mushrooms just kicked in, think I might be finished
The ball game heads for the worse
For what it's worth, I might just fall off the edge of the earth
Brain's kind of surfing now

We wander down darkened pathways in a daze, woy
"You want to buy any cocaine, boy?" Am I paranoid? "Yes, you're paranoid"
Charlie, darling, please save me, this is raving
Take me home to my baby, two bags of mushrooms
Room's mushed up and I need a cradle

In its own little way, my body was trying to say
That you'd better stop drinking brandy
In its own little way, my body was trying to say
That you'd better stop drinking brandy

Now getting to the bar's gonna be trouble
So the Marlons'll have to be doubles
Then you drink doubles
The same speed you drink singles
Ah, beautiful, the barman holds aloft the crystal glass
And I'm having all that's in the bubble in the bottom of the bottle

Then by three or four, your head's a bit mangled
Club's full, you mingle, you dance the fandango
You sing all your favorite jingles
Far gone on one, call me Baron Von Marlon
One has a monocle and cigar
Dickie bow and long Johns

My utility belt tells me it's to the bar, Batman
Fat cans of that lager then it's straight to the dance floor
For much more fancy footwork, it's adored by many amour
Don't awe me with your little sidestep technique
Get to the beat, loosen up, it's the streets

In its own little way, my body was trying to say
That you'd better stop drinking brandy
In its own little way, my body was trying to say
That you'd better stop drinking brandy

We eat junk food, sat drunk on the tube
Every time the train clunks I feel like puking
Wonder whether that beautiful bird'll ring
Then it all goes hazy, these are the days
We're walking up out and back to the road, talking
Well, shouting actually, loads more drunk, by Jove

Mind's focused, balance fucked up
Ra, ra, ra, it's all back to the Dogstar and
If it's his round I'm quite partial to another Marlon at the bar
Bad idea to start again late, should've given my brain a break
Take it easy, mate, you start to think
You're a state, you definitely are a state

In its own little way, my body was trying to say
That you'd better stop drinking brandy
In its own little way, my body was trying to say
That you'd better stop drinking brandy

Overall Meaning

The Streets' song "Too Much Brandy" is about a wild night out with friends. The song depicts the singer and his group of friends getting high on mushrooms and drinking a lot of alcohol, including brandy. The lyrics describe the sensory overload of the night as they wander through dark alleys and shady parts of Amsterdam. The song highlights the disconnect between the singer's mind and body, as his mind urges him to stop drinking brandy, but his body craves more.

The lyrics use vivid imagery to paint a picture of a chaotic night filled with excesses. From the smell of earthy herbs making the singer's nerves shudder to the mangled state of his head after drinking too much, the song depicts the highs and lows of a night out. The lyrics also touch on the paranoia that can come with taking drugs, as the singer wonders if he's being paranoid when asked if he wants to buy cocaine.

Overall, "Too Much Brandy" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of excess and the importance of listening to your body's warning signs.

This whole album is ๐Ÿ”ฅ Takes me back to when I was doing my GCSEโ€™s at school - I used to listen to it on The Streets website when I had access to a computer ๐Ÿ˜‚ this was before YouTube was ever heard of.

I remember first hearing โ€˜Has It Come To Thisโ€™ for the first time in the radio in my dads car, thinking โ€˜this is the shizโ€™ it was revolutionary, then all the radio kept playing it, even the papers were writing up mad reviews about it, crazy, represents my generation this album

@nigelcarren

BOOM... Straight in to it, no intro! It came in so hard I didn't even think to take my tea-bag out! ๐Ÿ†

@magnanimousj

I'm an American. When this came out, I was late teens and mostly into punk rock and metal. I didn't dislike rap and hip-hop, but it just wasn't for me. Someone played this for me, describing it as "British Eminem." I love the rawness and imperfection of it. I felt like it made me understand the experience of people who lived in a city I'd never been to, in a country I'd never been to.

@threethrushes

The whole album captures the working class of South London perfectly. Great album.

@ThePsOne

@Three Thrushes I agree, the man speaks about the mundane things us geezers do but manages to tell a story like no other. Whilst it sums up south London perfectly I think most of his ideas came from when he was living in West Heath personally.

@threethrushes

@ThePsOne OK I didn't know that. I just saw videos of him in Brixton (among other places).

@marklar7551

As an American, this album speaks to suburbia of the time and state college towns all over the place too. I was nostalgic in my early 30s when I picked up this disc for Stay Positive

@cameron_j40

โ€‹@@marklar7551no it doesn't
