The book (slaughter house 5 )is about this. In the book the protagonist literally moves between the past, present, and future. The point he is making is we do this all the time in our heads we should pick and chose what we are going to think about. That way we aren’t constantly bombarded by bad thoughts but living in the happy or pleasant or even important thoughts like when a loved one dies and is being remembered.

My family has now dwindled to myself and my 80ish sister. 2 of 4 kids left, only one grandson.just expressing some disbelief and anguish perhaps,. My parents never enjoyed or endorsed r and r. I’m only 19 but this song touches me in ways that others can’t start to. The pain of good memories, but also the hope of better memories that will come my way. It is a song that for me will be timeless. It can be related to by any person that has lived or that has life to live. It is sad yet hopeful. I remember watching this video on MTV when it came out in 1993 and it stands the test of time. The song was and is solid. You can see and hear the smoother 90s style--the clothes, the video style, the sounds--coming on strong. The cheesier 80s were in the rearview mirror. The video and song both seem influenced to me by U2's album Achtung Baby of two years earlier, another 80s-destroyer.

When I first heard this song in 1993, I was 15 years old. Although it was my first time listening to it, at some inexplicable level it's as if I had heard it before a 1000 times. It spoke to me in a very deep personal way. As a confused lonely teenager I found comfort in the song and its lyrics. I felt like I didn't belong anywhere, and at the same time I didn't have anyone to share my feelings of alienation. I only had THIS song. The lyrics conveyed my feelings of sadness, fear and hope. I longed so much to find my Ordinary World. As the years went by, and my life continued through its twists and turns, I continued to come back to this song, for comfort, for peace, to grieve, to reminisce, to cherish. One of the things I discovered as I aged and matured was that the Ordinary World I yearned for so long as a teenager, was always here, within me. And thanks to this song, I found it. The Holy Spirit is active in this world, sad-happy are one to Him, but where He operates there is healing and we make sense of things in the middle of all the evil chaos. He cieansed me of bad stuff, while enhancing the love in me, and words fail me as to how grateful I am. But He helps me with words too! (as He did in Bible times with The Disciples) So I try to tell people about my new vision of the world...

I love this song so much, my local pub put on a weekend festival of music, my pals where performing. They asked me to be a guest and sing this with them. My family all turned up, my son sat at front of the stage with a massive grin on his face. Happy days and a beautiful song!

I’m 34. I always thought of Duran Duran as an ‘80s band, and then this came up on the ‘90s station, on satellite radio. I was like… This is Duran Duran?! @ERIN FRAISE There are several answers to this, Erin, the first of which is that a song is more than just the writer of the words (very special and significant-looking [and rather openly religious] though the words of "Ordinary World" indeed are). I do not write what I write lightly, but look closely at the feelings and emotions the song evokes. A song is words and music as delivered and as received, and so "OW" is special as we all know. Also special in the context of the "Wedding Album". I think you will agree that none of the other tracks really resemble "OW", and none of them are anywhere near as brilliant. Interestingly, as well as dealing with the complex or even negative side of infatuation and sexual desire (a pretty typical and obvious DD theme through the years), there are also several songs about the world's (scandalous) political situation, which is quite interesting. But the songs are - let's face it - kind of unmemorable! Intriguingly, that does not necessarily mean they are invalid or not good, but still they are not life-changing, I feel. The critical mass is just not there, even as it is almost there with something like "A View to a Kill". I know that Simon Le Bon believed what he was writing with "OW" was about a lost friend, and of course that is a noble and fine and explicable and apparently normal thing. But somewhere in there, and in the setting of music to those words, and in the way it reaches the audience, something more happened. And I have no idea if Simon or Duran Duran in general had any idea that a transcendence had been achieved. But that is just what we expect with the Paraclete. Either we welcome Him/It in (and why not, because the love and connectivity and strong-gentleness and melancholy-ecstasy that comes from that is stunning), or we reject, or we are influenced without choosing to "see" (as in the great film "Signs"). It's sad if we never realise where this is all coming from, which is why I spend some hours of each of my blessed remaining days corresponding on this subject! But in the end the effect is there no matter what. The love-mercy-forgiveness-cosmic connectivity awaits us whenever we listen to the song, though obviously our mood can also affect the reception to some extent. A few people indeed find the song sad-nostalgic-melancholy (as was its original goal), but so many more find themselves happy and joyful or even ecstatic in spite of themselves. And that - I believe - is the Holy Spirit at work. He wants to reach us, and has readily adapted to the ways of the 20th and 21st centuries in order to do so. And, Erin, if you know of any song from DD or anyone else that has the same kind of impact on you, I would love to know its name. And, as one final question, I would love to know if you can explain even a little how it is possible that "Ordinary World" could not possibly have appeared in, say 1955, 1968, or 1975, or even 1980, instead of 1993. How is that, and just what does it mean?

Damn how cool is it that we as humans can all relate to a single song. We all go through the same life process. Love hate sadness happiness.
