Shelter
Porter Robinson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I could never find the right way to tell you
Have you noticed I've been gone?
'Cause I left behind the home that you made me
But I will carry it along

And it's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
Until you're gone

When I'm older, I'll be silent beside you
I know words won't be enough
And they won't need to know the names or our faces
But they will carry on for us

And it's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
Until you're gone

Oh it's a long way forward, trust in me
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
Until

Overall Meaning

you're gone

The lyrics of "Shelter" by Porter Robinson and Madeon explore the themes of familial love, sacrifice, and leaving home. Throughout the song, the singer speaks candidly to a person they have left behind, presumably a parental figure or someone who has taken care of them, expressing their gratitude and acknowledging the emotional weight of leaving. However, they also reassure the person, claiming that they will continue to carry the memories and love from the home, providing shelter for themselves and for others in the future. The song also hints at the idea of legacy and passing on traditions and values to future generations.

The chorus of the song, "And it's a long way forward, so trust in me/I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me/And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us/Until you're gone," is particularly poignant as it encapsulates the central message of the song. The singer acknowledges the difficult journey ahead, but they promise to provide shelter, both literally and metaphorically, to those who need it, just as the person they left behind had provided for them. They also express their confidence that the person they left behind will continue to watch over and protect them, even from a distance.

Overall, "Shelter" is a powerful song that captures the complex emotions that come with leaving home and the enduring love and support that family can provide.

translation of the letter:

"To Rin
From : Dad
There was only a bit of time left after you were born.
I don't know how much love I have poured into raising you after your mother died...
But your smile kept me going. (^_^)

I'd like to have come with you, but I couldn't.
I wanted you to forget everything and move on... I knew you'd be ok.
But you'll get lonely, and remember.

I know you'll grow strong, and read this letter one day.
I really wish we spent more time together. I'm sorry.
You were so young back then, too young to understand what it meant. So let me repeat...

My final words to you."

the final words were her monologue at the end.

@Sho4Official

@ownlydown5933

Just found this song few months back over the summer.

I never really had any music taste until i turned 20. I literally was not Hip or hop and up to date with any new songs.

Now finally 6 years later I'm finally finding these master pieces. And it has really help me move forward.

As we all know being a Adult and having the world weigh down on you is very exhausting. Music bring you back into the light forsure.

Thx for this amazing masterpiece. Better late than never

I had to cry really hard because it reminded me of my young daughter who passed away a year ago. Especially as a young dad in my early 20s, it's quite challenging, but this video somehow gives me hope. Knowing that she is somewhere as safe as depicted in this fantastic short film.

@nekoboyrin5475

I believe all children before the age of accountability that die, go to heaven. However if you wish to see her again, it's up to you to ask for Jesus to be your lord and savior; knowing what he's done for you, and to be repentant of your sins.

@16xthedetail76

Forget neko and her insane ramblings. I am so sorry for your loss and i hope she is well wherever she may be. My friend, stay strong and look forward to the future.

@pinokosthewife

I'm so sorry about your daughter! That sounds unimaginably difficult...
She's probably playing with a lot of other little kids, watched over by Sarah and Abraham. ;3;

[[“We set off, and we came to a verdant garden, in which were all the colours of spring, where there was a man who was so tall that I could hardly see his head in the sky. Around the man was the largest number of children I had ever seen…”

Then among things that the two angels explained to him was: “As for the tall man who was in the garden, that was Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him). As for the children who were around him, these are all the children who died in a state of fitrah [the natural state of purity and faith].” One of the Muslims said: “O Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him), what about the children of the mushrikeen [polytheists]?” He said: “And the children of the mushrikeen [polytheists].”]] (Bukhari)
