Masterhit
Front 242 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know me and I sure you
Everyone

You seem so, tender

Give me some more of the warm little beasts
I'm so fond of

Master, I'm so glad to feel your presence
But you don't seem to share my impatience
I relied upon you to break the silence
I cannot understand your reluctance

Master, I feel so warm and I'm so happy, oh master

Give me some more of the warm little beasts
I'm so fond of

You seem so
I could melt the frozen wall you raised between us
and now I'm on the other side, you seem rather surprised

Constricting viscous rings around your warm body
Holding you tied, holding you tied... and I feel so happy

You seem so tender
As the warm little beasts
I'm so fond of

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Front 242's Masterhit are enigmatic in their meaning, but suggest an intimate relationship between the singer and their "Master". The lyrics begin with the singer expressing a familiarity with their Master, but also addressing an unspecified audience ("you know me and I sure you, everyone"). The repetition of the phrase "give me some more of the warm little beasts I'm so fond of" may suggest an addiction or obsession with something that the Master provides. The singer expresses happiness at feeling the Master's presence, but also registers disappointment at what they see as the Master's lack of responsiveness or reluctance to engage.

Later in the song, the singer becomes more forceful, speaking of "constricting viscous rings around your warm body" and expressing happiness at holding the subject tied. Yet even here, vulnerability creeps in, as the singer asks the Master to "melt the frozen wall you raised between us". The song as a whole can be read as an exploration of power dynamics, desire, and frustration in a relationship that is alternately loving and confrontational. The precise nature of the relationship remains unclear, however, and the opaque lyrics leave ample room for interpretation.

I bought Official Version in 1998 at a second hand store. I was 18, I'd heard some electronic music (the pop house/techno stuff and the "big beat" stuff that was everywhere on the radio), but when I put this on and it sounded like nothing I'd heard before. It wasn't repetitive, it was spacey, had great melodies, but certainly not just "electronic rock". It blew my mind. Still love this album 22 years later :)
