Sit / Stay
Poppy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time you fall back down
Sit and stay, lie on the ground
Do what you've been, what you've been told
Sit, stay, lie down
Sit, stay, lie down

Ooh
Ooh

Godspeed to the radio star
Stop the beat when they take it too far
Don't go blind from the stars in your eyes
Welcome to the new starting line
Welcome to the new starting line

Hide your face, don't talk back
I have you now, so face the fact
Do what you've been, what you've been told
Sit, stay, lie down
Sit, stay, lie down

Ooh
Ooh

Godspeed to the radio star
Stop the beat when they take it too far
Don't go blind from the stars in your eyes
Welcome to the new starting line
Welcome to the new starting line
Welcome to the new starting line
Welcome to the new starting line

(I will not obey you, I will not obey)
(I will not obey you, I will not obey)

Overall Meaning

In Poppy's song Sit / Stay, the lyrics appear to revolve around the idea of obedience and control. The repeated lines "Sit, stay, lie down" seem to be a command, possibly from a dominant figure or society as a whole, telling the listener to conform and stay in their place. The line "Every time you fall back down, sit and stay, lie on the ground" suggests that the listener has already faced adversity or failure and is being told to remain in a submissive position. The use of animal training commands adds to the idea of the listener being treated like a pet rather than a person.

The chorus of "Godspeed to the radio star, stop the beat when they take it too far" seems to be a warning against excessive fame or influence. The "radio star" could represent anyone in the public eye, and the lyrics suggest that there is a point where that influence can become dangerous. The "stars in your eyes" could be a metaphor for ambition or false promises, warning the listener not to lose themselves in the pursuit of success.

The bridge of "Hide your face, don't talk back, I have you now, so face the fact" portrays a sense of control and dominance. The singer tells the listener to hide and remain silent, and the line "I have you now" suggests that the power dynamic has shifted in favor of the dominant figure. The repetition of "sit, stay, lie down" reinforces this idea of obedience and subservience.

Overall, the lyrics of Sit / Stay seem to convey a message of caution against blindly following authority and conforming to societal expectations, especially when it comes to fame and influence.

Here's what I think some of the lyrics mean:
"Godspeed to the radio star"
In this case, I think the radio star refers to poppy
"Stop the beat when they take it too far"
Titanic took things WAY too far and it needed to stop
"Don't go blind from the stars in your eyes"
I thinks this is poppy's usual message about how we treat celebrities.
"Welcome to the new starting line"
Poppy is restarting her image how she wants to. It's a new beginning.
