Taking elements more specifically from Hip-hop, Trap, Alternative R&B, Rock and Cloud Rap, emo rap finds its significance in blending moody production, provocatively dark lyricism, and sullen artist imagery. Emo rap artists tend therefore to have a mournful delivery when flowing over their emo influenced hip hop music. Sampling is also a widely used method to create emo rap, with many artists rapping, crooning, and singing over Midwest Emo, Emo-Pop, and Pop Punk samples. This genre also contributes to the "emo revival" phenomenon, which started in the early 2010s.
In the late 2000s, references to the "emo rap" term were already being made, crediting for instance Kid Cudi's Man on the Moon: The End of Day album for incorporating some emo elements in the lyricism like mentions of concepts like depression, loneliness, and anxiety. Allusions to Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak and Drake's So Far Gone were also being made. However it was the early 2010s that multiple artists such as BONES, Black Kray, and Yung Lean were starting to bring stylistic techniques of emo, melancholic lyricism, and lethargy into hip hop and were getting more attention from listeners and publicists. Seemingly underground artists soon took it upon themselves to flagship this style of hip hop and emo into their own music, with formerly named Yung Bruh, Lil Peep, and the GothBoiClique putting material out in the mid 2010s, with more focused attempts to establish emo rap as a music genre.
Around the mid to late 2010s, emo rap broke through the mainstream and gained renowned popularity and critical attention with the main examples of Lil Peep's [song]"Awful Things"[/song], XXXTENTACION's [song]"Jocelyn Flores"[/song], Lil Xan's [song]"Betrayed"[/song] and most notably Lil Uzi Vert's [song]"XO Tour Llif3"[/song] being emo rap hits. The genre continues to work on and establish its relevancy in the midst of contemporary hip hop.

LIL UZI VERT Lyrics
You alright
I'm alright
I'm quite alright
And my money's right, yeah
Countin' them bands all way to the top 'til they be fallin' over
Countin' them bands on my way to the top 'til we fallin' over
I don't really care if you cry
On the real you should've never lied
Should've saw the way she looked me in my eyes
She said baby I am not afraid to, die
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
Phantom that's all red
Inside all white
Like something you ride a sled down
I just want that head
My Brittany got mad
I'm really her man now
Everybody got the same swag now
One way that I trap now
Stackin' my bands all the way to the top
All the way 'til my bands fallin' over
Every time that you leave your spot
Your girlfriend call me like "Come on over"
I like the way that she treat me
Gon' leave you won't leave me, I call it that Casanova
She said I'm insane yeah
I might blow my brain out
Xanny numb the pain yeah
Please, Xanny make it go away
I'm committed, not addicted but it keep controlling me
All that pain now I can't feel it, I swear that it's slowing me (yeah)
I don't really care if you cry
On the real, you should've never lied
Saw the way she looked me in my eyes
She said I am not afraid to, die
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead (yeah)
All my friends are dead (yeah)
That is not your swag I swear you faking
All these niggas wanna take my cake now
Radar, at the store, radar
Made somethin', look nigga take some
Fast car, Nascar, race on
In the club they got no ones, that we were baked now
Clothes from overseas, got the racks and they all C-Notes, you is not a G though
Look at you stackin' all your money, it ain't green though
I was counting that and it's not 20, that's a zero
She say
You're the worst, you're the worst
I cannot die because this my universe
I don't really care if you cry
On the real, you should've never lied
Should've saw the way she looked me in my eyes
She said baby I am not afraid to, die
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge

[Intro]
Are you alright?
I'm alright, I'm quite alright
And my money's right
8… (Yeah)
Countin' them bands
All way to the top 'til they be fallin' over
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
Countin' them bands
On my way to the top 'til we fallin' over
[Chorus]
I don't really care if you cry
On the real, you shoulda never lied
Shoulda saw the way she looked me in my eyes
She said, "Baby, I am not afraid to die"
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
[Verse 1]
Phantom that's all red, inside all white
Like somethin' you ride a sled down, I just want that head
My Brittany got mad, I'm barely her man now
Everybody got the same swag now
Watch the way that I tear it down
Stackin' my bands all the way to the top
All the way 'til my bands fallin' over
Every time that you leave your spot
Your girlfriend call me like, "Come on over!"
I like the way that she treat me
Gon' leave you, won't leave me, I call it that Casanova
She say I'm insane, yeah
I might blow my brain out (Hey)
Xanny, help the pain, yeah
Please, Xanny, make it go away
I'm committed, not addicted, but it keep control of me
All the pain, now I can't feel it
I swear that it's slowin' me, yeah
[Chorus]
I don't really care if you cry
On the real, you shoulda never lied
Saw the way she looked me in my eyes
She said, "I am not afraid to die" (Yeah)
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge (Yeah)
All my friends are dead, yeah, ooh
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead, yeah
All my friends are dead, yeah
[Verse 2]
That is not your swag, I swear you fake hard
Now these niggas wanna take my cadence
Rain on 'em, thunderstorm, rain on 'em (Ooh, yeah)
Medicine, lil' nigga, take some (Yeh, yeh)
Fast car, NASCAR, race on 'em
In the club, ain't got no ones, then we would beg them
Clothes from overseas, got the racks and they all C-Notes
You is not a G though
Lookin' at you stackin' all your money, it all green though
I was countin' that and these all twenties, that's a G-roll
[Bridge]
She say, "You're the worst, you're the worst"
I cannot die because this my universe
[Chorus]
I don't really care if you cry
On the real, you shoulda never lied
Shoulda saw the way she looked me in my eyes
She said, "Baby, I am not afraid to die"
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
All my friends are dead
Push me to the edge
