Woo-hoo
Woo-hoo
Woo-hoo
I got my head checked
By a jumbo jet
It wasn't easy
But nothing is
No
(Woo-hoo) When I feel heavy metal
(Woo-hoo) And I'm pins and I'm needles
(Woo-hoo) Well, I lie and I'm easy
All of the time but I'm never sure why I need you
Pleased to meet you
I got my head done
When I was young
It's not my problem
It's not my problem
(Woo-hoo) When I feel heavy metal
(Woo-hoo) And I'm pins and I'm needles
(Woo-hoo) Well, I lie and I'm easy
All of the time but I'm never sure why I need you
Pleased to meet you
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah
At first listen, "Song 2" by Blur may appear to be a tribute to heavy metal music, but upon closer inspection, the lyrics tell a more complex story. The song begins with the infamous "woo-hoo" chant, which serves as a hook and a catchy addition to the chorus. The first verse sees the singer getting his "head checked" by a "jumbo jet," which suggests a painful and overwhelming experience. However, he admits that "nothing is easy" and seems to be in a state of resignation.
In the chorus, the singer describes feeling like he's "heavy metal" and experiencing physical discomfort, but this is contrasted by his claim that he's "easy" all the time. He's never sure why he needs whoever he's addressing, but he's "pleased to meet" them nonetheless. The second verse is even more cryptic, as the singer claims that his head was "done" when he was young. This could be a reference to a traumatic experience or a forgotten memory. The repeated "It's not my problem" line seems to suggest that he's trying to distance himself from something, but he's not entirely successful.
Overall, "Song 2" is a song about confusion and emotional pain. The singer is grappling with intense feelings and trying to make sense of them. The heavy metal imagery could be seen as a metaphor for his internal struggle, as well as a nod to the genre itself. It's a song that's both catchy and introspective, which is why it has remained a beloved part of Blur's discography to this day.

I first heard this masterpiece on TV when watching a hockey game. It's unbelievable how many teams in the NHL adopted this song as their goal song.

I'm sure this has been mentioned 7.3 million times, BUT...I love how this song has its genesis in the band essentially parodying a prototypical American 'grunge rock anthem' while dicking around in rehearsal, and then the result went on to not only become a hit--but far and away, by a HUGE margin...their biggest hit in the US, lol. You couldn't have written it better
