And We All Return To Our Roots
The Forecast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This letter's sealed with a kiss
Sent with a promise
Of a better life with a better view
I'd rather move than watch you
Damn the gods with things from a life now lost
We can patch this up the boat's not sinking
We're still afloat and we're singing

All I want
All I want
Is a little place of my own where I can rest my head
All I want
All I want
Is a little place of my own where I can rest my head

Drink up darling
We can save this ‘till the morning
When we have clear eyes and the peace of mind to work this out
You need a raise, you haven't slept in how many days?
The feelings creeping up that you're never going to win
You have to remember we are rising

All I want
All I want
Is a little place of my own where I can rest my head
All I want
All I want
Is a little place of my own where I can rest my head

We are the ones back to our roots
We are the dust that lies in you
We are the ones in too deep
We are the ones we are

We are the ones back to our roots
We are the dust that lies in you
We are the ones in too deep
We are the ones we are

All I want (We are the ones back to our roots)
All I want (We are the dust that lies in you)
Is a little place of my own (We are the ones in too deep)
Where I can rest my head (We are the ones we are)

All I want (We are the ones back to our roots)
All I want (We are the dust that lies in you)
Is a little place of my own (We are the ones in too deep)
Where I can rest my head (We are the ones we are)

All I want (We are the ones back to our roots)
All I want (We are the dust that lies in you)
Is a little place of my own (We are the ones in too deep)
Where I can rest my head (We are the ones we are)

All I want (We are the ones back to our roots)
All I want (We are the dust that lies in you)
Is a little place of my own (We are the ones in too deep)
Where I can rest my head (We are the ones we are)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Forecast's "And We All Return To Our Roots" speak of a desire for a better life and a better view, with the urgency to move forward instead of staying stagnant. The letter sent with a promise of a better life reflects a hope that all people have for an improved future. The singer would rather take action and move towards this future than stay in a comfortable but unsatisfactory place.

In the middle section of the song, there is a call for a break to allow everyone involved to regroup, rest and find clarity. The feeling of being overwhelmed comes through as the singer encourages a partner to take a break and get some rest. The problem of trying to win and failing is also addressed, with the advice to remember that the people involved are rising and not to give up.

The chorus repeats the desire for a little space to call one's own and the declaration that the people singing are the ones returning to their roots. The reference to roots is a call to return to the fundamental things that are solid and good.

it’s amazing how the internet is slowly bringing this band back into the consciousness, esp for us in the hot topic/fuse generation. i discovered this band in grade school bc the music video for These Lights was in the victory records dvd sampler that was included with June’s IYSAF LP. i hadn’t thought of em since and 15 whole years later i’ve rediscovered them and it’s been an absolute obsession this autumn. by far one of the most underrated bands of the genre and of the generation

It's a bummer they aren't still around. I'd love to see them live
