Shuggie
Foxygen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I live in the palm of your hand, down the stream, see
King of flowers off the floor and drinking tea

But you don't love me, that's news to me

I met your daughter the other day, that was weird
She had rhinoceros shaped earrings in her ears
But, hey man have a soda, it's on the house
Remember what I told you, about the rooms inside this house

But you don't love me, that's news to me
That's news to me, that's news to
I begin and I begin, and I

If you believe in yourself you can free your soul
My heart is breaking in two, I don't know what to do

But you don't love me, that's news to me
That's news to me, that's news to
I begin and I begin, and I

If you believe in yourself you can free your soul
My heart is breaking in two, I don't know what to do
You were right with the words, you make it too loose
I'm happy if she's happy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Foxygen's song "Shuggie" seem to be a mix of different narratives and themes, which can make it difficult to analyze. The first line of the song, "I live in the palm of your hand, down the stream, see," is a metaphorical interpretation of a relationship in which one person is overly dependent on the other. The next line, "King of flowers off the floor and drinking tea," can be interpreted in different ways, but it might suggest that the person in the relationship who is dependent is trying to impress the other person with their knowledge and taste in tea.

Later in the song, the singer tells a story about meeting the other person's daughter, who is wearing rhinoceros-shaped earrings. The lyrics then take an abrupt turn as the singer tells the other person about the rooms inside their house, a detail that seems out of place. Throughout the song, the singer seems to be lamenting the fact that the other person doesn't love them, something that might be news to the singer. The repeated line, "If you believe in yourself, you can free your soul," might suggest that the singer is trying to convince themselves that they don't need the other person's love to be complete.

Lyrics: I live in the parlor, but I'm down in the street, singing
Keep the flowers off the floor and drinking tea

But she don't love me, that's news to me

I met your daughter the other day, that was weird
She had rhinoceros shaped earrings in her ears
But, hey man have a soda, it's on the house
Remember what I told you, about the rooms inside this house

But you don't love me, that's news to me
That's news to me, that's news to
I'm thinking and I could be, and I...

If you believe in yourself you can free your soul
My heart is breaking into two, but I know what to do

But you don't love me, that's news to me
That's news to me, that's news to
I'm thinking and I could be, and I...

If you believe in yourself you can free your soul
My heart is breaking into two, but I know what to do
You were right for the words, you make it too loose
I'm happy if she's happy x2 (i think)

I think the lyrics are like this

I live in the parlor but I'm down the street
See him picking up flowers off the floor and drinking tea
But you don't love me, that's news to me
I met your daughter the other day, that was weird
She had rhinoceros shaped earrings in her ears
But, hey man, have a soda, it's on the house
Remember what I told you about the rooms inside this house

[Pre-Chorus]
But you don't love me, that's news to me
That's news to me, that's news to—

[Chorus]
I think you... and I... could be... in love ...
If you believe in yourself you can free your soul
My heart is breaking in two, I don't know what to do

[Pre-Chorus]
[But you don't love me, that's news to me
That's news to me, that's news to—

[Chorus]
I think you... and I... could be... in love ...
If you believe in yourself you can free your soul
My heart is breaking in two, I don't know what to do

If you are right with the world, you can make it your girl
I'm happy, she's happy

For everyone saying "this sounds like..." Generally speaking I feel that foxygen sounds like everything from the Beatles, to the doors, to MGMT, to the gorillaz, to whatever else you can think of... But for me this sounds very uniquely foxygen, it's so very much what they are. And I love it.

@Goober504

sounds like bob dylan

@rihaprophet2435

Lou Reed and David Bowie had a love child using Mick Jagger as their surrogate

@hippiecheezburger5457

Honestly I think good music will always sound like something that came before it, a good group has good obvious influences and develop their own thing from there

@chayseblack4162

This is true, for every person will have their own subjective idea of who it sounds like. Myself for example always thought they sounded like The Rolling Stones and MGMT both in the same song sometimes.

@maryoneill7083

This song uses an interpolation of the song Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis. I assume that is why they named the song Shuggie.
