I Go Back
Kenny Chesney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jack and Diane painted a picture of my life and my dreams
Suddenly this crazy world made more sense to me
Well, I heard it today and I couldn't help but sing along
'Cause every time I hear that song

And I go back to a two toned short bed Chevy
Drivin' my first love out to the levee
Livin' life with no sense of time
And I go back to the feel of a fifty yard line
A blanket, a girl, some raspberry wine
Wishin' time would stop right in its tracks
Every time I hear that song
I'll go back, I'll go back

And I used to rock all night long to, Keep On Rockin' Me Baby
At Frat parties, college bars, just tryin' to impress the ladies
Well, I heard it today and I couldn't help but sing along
'Cause every time I hear that song

And I go back to the smell of an old gym floor
And the taste of salt on a Carolina shore
After graduation and drinkin' goodbye to friends
And I go back to watchin' summer fade to fall
Growin' up too fast and I do recall
Wishin' time would stop right in its tracks
Every time I hear that song
I go back, I go back

We all have a song that somehow stamped our lives
That takes us to another place and time

So I go back to a pew, preacher, and a choir
Singin' 'bout God, and brimstone, and fire
And the smell of Sunday chicken after church
And I go back to the loss of a real good friend
And the sixteen summers I shared with him
Now, Only The Good Die Young stops me in my tracks
Every time I hear that song
I'll go back, I'll go back

To the feel of a fifty yard line
A blanket, a girl, some raspberry wine
I go back (I go back)

To watchin' summer fade into fall
Growin' up too fast and I do recall
I go back (I go back)

To the loss of a real good friend
And the sixteen summers I shared with him
I go back

I go back, I go back, ooh

Overall Meaning

Kenny Chesney's I Go Back is a nostalgic anthem about the power of music to transport the listener back to meaningful moments in their past. The lyrics are a series of vignettes about specific experiences that are connected to particular songs. The first verse invokes the memory of Jack and Diane, a hit song by John Mellencamp. For the singer, the song reminds him of how these characters and their story encapsulated his own aspirations and sense of direction.

The second verse cites Keep On Rockin' Me Baby by the Steve Miller Band. The singer recalls his days as a college student, trying to impress women at frat parties and college bars with his ability to dance to this particular song. The third verse takes us to a church service, where the singer reflects on how the hymns he once sang with gusto still conjure up the smell of Sunday chicken after church.

These verses are all tied together by the chorus, which asserts the power of music to take the singer back to these moments in time. He recalls specific details of each experience, from driving to the levy with his first love in a two-toned Chevy, to the feeling of watching summer fade into fall, to the pain of losing a close friend. The song celebrates the way that music can be a time machine, transporting us not just to different moments but to different versions of ourselves.

I am only 16 and everytime i hear this song i think of the two freinds i lost in two separate car accidents. I was really close with both of them but i can only remember them. People please dont drink and drive you may think you can do it but you can't. You may not get hurt but others feel pain because of your stupidity. SO PLEASE DONT DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!

I am sorry for your loss. When I was 17 I was in a bad car wreck due to drinking and driving (I was in the backseat) and they almost lost me. Long story short I had an 8 percent chance of living and being 100% brain dead IF I did live, I was life flighted, prnounced dead on the scene (covered in blood/seizuring) I was cut out of the car and then life flighted to Dallas. so yes like you said Don't drink and drive man its not worth it

@stevencater

Amen

@stevencater

It's not a tragedy until they've experience something like that but I wish that on no body mo family

I lost my best friend on Valentine’s Day… many years ago, he was walking his girlfriend home… from a party, the snow was heavy, they were walking against traffic so they could get out of the way when traffic came, a Drunk passed a car on a bridge and took him out… it still haunts me today after 40 years 😢
