Feist Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Tell me that you love me more
Sleepless long nights
That is what my youth was for
Old teenage hopes are alive at your door
Left you with nothing, but they want some more
Oh, uh, oh, you're changing your heart
Oh, uh, oh, you know who you are
Sweetheart, bitter heart, now I can't tell you apart
Cozy and cold, put the horse before the cart
Those teenage hopes who have tears in their eyes
Too scared to own up to one little lie
Oh, uh, oh, you're changing your heart
Oh, uh, oh, you know who you are
One, two, three, four, five, six, nine, or ten
Money can't buy you back the love that you had then
One, two, three, four, five, six, nine, or ten
Money can't buy you back the love that you had then
Oh, uh, oh, you're changing your heart
Oh, uh, oh, you know who you are
Oh, uh, oh, you're changing your heart
Oh, uh, oh, you know who you are
Who you are-are-are-are, ooh-ooh
Oh, for the teenage boys
They're breaking your heart
For the teenage boys
They're breaking your heart
Feist's song 1234 is a catchy and upbeat track that manages to stay away from being too saccharine despite the mention of love. The song starts by counting from one to four and then, the singer asks the person to tell her that they love her more. She then discusses how her youth was full of sleepless nights and teenage hopes. She explains how they are still alive as she stands at the door of the person she is addressing, who seems to have gotten tired of these emotions.
Feist then emphasizes how the person is changing their heart and how they know who they truly are. The second verse is about how the singer is no longer sure whether the person still loves her. She compares the person to being cozy and cold, unable to make any progress in their relationship. The song then emphasizes how money cannot buy back the love someone might have had. The choruses reiterate how the person is changing their heart and are aware of who they are.
