In the beginning
God created Heaven and Earth
For what it's worth, I think that he might've created you first
Just my opinion
Your body is the one paradise that I wanna fly to
Every day and every night

I've been sick and tired of running
Chasing all of the flashing lights
These late nights don't mean nothing
So I just wanna apologize
I'm sorry, so sorry
I'm sorry, yeah

I need your love
And I'm dying for the rush
'Cause my heart ain't got enough
I need your touch
This is getting serious
Tell me that it's not the end of us
How can we go back to the beginning?
How can we go back to the beginning?
Without you, I've got no air to breathe in
How can we go back to the beginning?

Don't matter what's written
We can start all over again, all over again
Oh, how can I get you all over my skin?
My deep intuition tells me that I'm doing you wrong
If I don't come home
Just say you forgive me and don't let me go

I've been sick and tired of running
Chasing all of the flashing lights
These late nights don't mean nothing
So I just wanna apologize
I'm sorry, so sorry
I'm sorry, yeah

I need your love
And I'm dying for the rush
'Cause my heart ain't got enough
I need your touch
This is getting serious
Tell me that it's not the end of us
How can we go back to the beginning?
How can we go back to the beginning?
Without you, I've got no air to breathe in
How can we go back to the beginning?

You know, I roar like a lion
For you, you know I'll keep trying 'til the sun stops rising

I need your love
And I'm dying for the rush
'Cause my heart ain't got enough
I need your touch
This is getting serious
Tell me that it's not the end of us
How can we go back to the beginning?
How can we go back to the beginning?
Without you, I've got no air to breathe in
How can we go back to the beginning?

Overall Meaning

"Genesis" by Dua Lipa is an emotionally-charged song about the need for love and the desire to start over when things go wrong in a relationship. The opening lines nod towards the creation story in the Bible, with the reference to God creating Heaven and Earth. The singer believes that if there is one thing that might have been created before all of these things, it is her lover. Her lover is like paradise to her, a perfect destination that she wants to fly to every day and every night.

The second verse continues the theme of the singer's dissatisfaction with her life without this person, as she realizes that all the flashing lights and late nights that seemed so exciting before, now mean nothing to her. She feels the need to apologize for her actions in order to regain her lover's trust. She is desperate for their love and touch as her heart is incomplete without them.

The chorus becomes a plea for their lover to give them another chance, starting anew and going back to the beginning. The singer is willing to try as hard as she can to fix things between them, even if it means roaring like a lion. The song ends with the singer affirming her need for her lover, her desire for a fresh start and her willingness to do whatever it takes to make things right.
