I Wanna Be the One
fun. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Were you named for the river that surrounds*
All my biggest my mistakes or the way that I made it out
All the muscles in my mouth never smiled or said profound things
Until the day she handed you to me

Now for all the steps you'll take and all you'll overcome
I wanna be the one to put in a song
Take every single tear for all the world to hear
I wanna be the one to put it in a song

Cigarettes are raining hard on the Upper East Side
She brings me a cake we celebrate I have arrived
And I know that it's been sang before but you're my human holiday
I put my hands to the table and dare say the love of my life
And your brother with his best friend
Shares a name I'm gonna need
Really couldn't bring me down

For everything you lost and all you overcome
I wanna be the one to put it in a song
Take every single tear for all the world to hear
I wanna be the one to put it in a song and make it last forever

Clever comes in truth when truth begets the past
Its sends its call out to the moon
And the moon can see the beauty that surrounds your heart as it pounds
It starts the beat inspiring me until I make the sound

I wanna be the one, I wanna be one, I wanna be the one

For everything you lost and all you overcome
I wanna be the one to put it in a song
Take every single tear for all the world to hear
I wanna be the one to put it in a song

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "I Wanna Be the One" is a reflection on the birth of a child, possibly the singer's own child. The river that surrounds may represent the difficulties and challenges that the singer has faced in their life, leading up to this moment of pure joy and love. The line "all the muscles in my mouth never smiled or said profound things" could suggest that the singer has struggled to express love and vulnerability, but with the arrival of the child, they have found a new depth of emotion to explore. The desire to put the child's journey into a song speaks to the power of music to capture and communicate deep emotions.

The second verse takes place in a different setting, on the Upper East Side of New York City. The singer celebrates their arrival, perhaps in a new stage of life or career, with the help of someone special. The mention of cigarettes raining down could suggest a destructive force raining down on the city, but the singer is able to find joy and celebration despite the difficulties. The line "you're my human holiday" is a beautiful way of describing the importance of meaningful connections with loved ones, and the desire to use music to preserve and honor those connections.

The final verse speaks to the power of truth and inspiration in the creative process. Cleverness alone is not enough to create something profound; it must come from a place of truth and authenticity. The moon's beauty, reflecting the beauty of the child's heart, inspires the singer to make music that captures that beauty and preserves it forever.

Overall, "I Wanna Be the One" is a tender and heartfelt expression of love and connection, and the power of music to transcend time and preserve cherished memories.

Being a fan from the beginning is not a way to say you own them. It is a way of saying you were lucky enough to know them.

Extremely underrated band and song. This whole album is solid!

The vibes produced from Some Nights and Aim and Ignite is shocking. This album is so raw and emotional that you feel like Nate is singing directly to you. Some Nights feels like he was forced to use all this "popular" stuff that you don't quite feel the picture he paints in every song like with Aim and Ignite.

I used to really not like this song that much, skipping it every time it came up in a playlist, but now I can't stop listening to it!

Absolutely LOVE that high note on "make a sound". So amazing! That is why I love this band! Such unique music and amazing vocals. Their songs put me in the best of moods, no matter how I was feeling before. Just an incredibly all-over talented band. So glad I was lucky enough to discover these guys :) If I never found this band I would totally be missing out.
