This was always Bob, he simply decided to show us this side of him. He had the motorcycle accident, had a kid, left the scene and limelight, and just went back to his roots later in his career as well. No pretense, no public persona, he was where he wanted to be, doing what he wanted to do, and didn't care how it was perceived. He was already a legend, may as well completely go against the public perception and enjoy it all the more.
-He basically always had, and had the versatility to do this at different stages in his life and career at will. Even as a great composer and musician, you can only sing Like a Rolling Stone or Blowing in the Wind so many times before the song starts to lose all meaning or gets stale as a performer. A lot of artists had a hangover coming out of the 1960's, the scene was changing, so the options were to keep doing the same thing, or reinvent yourself and try something new, and Dylan wasn't afraid of that, he had been there many times before.
-Of course, working with people like Johnny Cash and musicians of a different background and sensibility helps along the way, and Nashville has its own vibe as well musically. The rare gems are among my favorites and lesser known, like Easy Chair, and some of the tracks off of the Bootleg series, Bear Mountain Picnic, it is all still Bob, but a more accessible and fun side of him moving on and trying a lot of new things. Listening throughout Dylan's career is like listening to completely different people at times during certain stages of his life.

This is almost like Bob in his younger days, reporters would come to interview him and he'd just completely make up his whole life story on the spot, spin some yarn or narrative, tell them he grew up in the circus, his parents were gypsies, most anything to completely throw them off his trail and to have fun. They'd print it of course without doing any fact checking, and fell for it nearly every time in the early days. I think it is hilarious how he repeatedly abused the idiot press or made good-natured fun of them. He wasn't mean, just bored and fed up with how they screwed with him in the press and their stories, so he turned the tables on them, and did the same thing right back to their faces. He could tell them he was retiring to raise and milk chupacabras and shave Bigfoot and sasquatches for hair to weave sweaters for the needy and underprivileged, and it would be in the papers the following days.

In my opinion the reason Bob has had such longevity is that he has constantly been re-inventing himself with different musical styles. You're right in that the Nashville sound was
always inside of him. I'm just glad he came out with it when he did. I bought this album when I was just 13 and my friends were more into The Archies, Tommy Roe and other
bubblegum pop available at the time. I saw Dylan on The Johnny Cash Show when he sang a duet with him, Girl From The North Country and I was hooked....

I have the original album. My father was a building inspector in NYC through the 60's-70's. He had to inspect work done on Dylans house and met him. Had no idea who he was. Dylan asked him if he had kids and handed him this album. My old man also met Joe Cocker, Bill Graham, John Lennon, Phil Spector, Woody Allen etc. Never got one signature.lol

Cool! I have a kind of opposite story. Grew up with albums on my wall and in my 40's became a small to mid-level concert producer/promoter. Ended up getting to know several artists and my LP covers are now all autographed! Also I have a friend who painted houses and he did Petty's interior. Inside the front door was a closet where he threw his junk mail. Big pile had to be removed to paint. Tom told him he could take whatever he wanted, so he has a collection of Tom Petty's junk mail!

@@guilhermebahia6050 Hmmm....well, you look pretty young, but I'm 72, so old enough to remember Dylan in his heyday, and I can tell you no one thought of Dylan as "Country"! He was always pure FOLK, or eventually Folk-rock, if you wanted to get technical, once he went electric. But no one thought of him as country. And he sounded nothing like country music back in that time. Maybe a bit more like what pretends to be country now days. But that's not really country! And if you'll look up at the top, under the video and the title, in the description it clearly says "#Folk"! No one who remembers Folk music at its height, and country as it was then would label this song, or anything Dylan did as country. He's always been Folk, all the way! And I think he'd say that, too!

John Wesley Harding and New Morning also have Country elements although they are more blended with folk. But Nashville Skyline is as Country as it could be, just look at the participation of Johnny Cash, were it was recorded and etc... Look at the differences between Girl From the North Country in this and in Freewheling Bob Dylan, the difference is crystal clear.

Absolutely - managed to see him four times in Oct/Nov 22 - often you would go fearing the worst and hoping for the best (although he's only disappointed me once) but at the age of 81 he and the band were incredible - a well paced tight set including an achingly beautiful To Be Alone With You off this album. I cried less by Gig No. 3, but then Dublin and the close of the tour left a 'pool of tears beneath my feet' at the end of Every Grain of Sand. As you stated: Amazing!
