The Heaviest Matter of the Universe
Gojira Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lay down, fall away

Lie awake
Just cannot move my arms and legs, I'm paralyzed
Don't recall how to free myself from this
In the heart of the dark
My face contorted, don't know how to reach the light
But I feel so bad, like a freak in a cage

Open the door
Enter your heart
You go

So far

Golden unworldly silence
Space flight at speed of light
I cross the clouds and colors
The black hole is calling me
Slide on the horizon
On the frontier not to cross

Black dwarf
Time's gone distorted
In the heart of the dark
A whirl of light

Enter in the realm of nothingness
I feel the cold, my eyes are shut
My fear is slowly dying
Light-years from here are my thoughts and cages
I can hear their moan
But now a long deep breath is calling

Overtaking time
And now understanding space
I feel united
I do cross light, I feel the living
Here in the centre stands the light of love
That never can be touched from greater silence shall return

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gojira's song The Heaviest Matter of the Universe present a deeply introspective exploration of the concept of space and time, and a human's place within it. The song starts with haunting imagery of paralysis and a feeling of being trapped, both physically and mentally, in the darkness of the universe. The singer is "a freak in a cage," unable to reach the light that seems to be just out of sight. But then the tone shifts as an opportunity arises to "open the door" and "enter your heart," a metaphorical journey that leads the singer "so far" away from the confines of the physical world.

The middle of the song takes on a more fantastical tone, as the singer's journey through space and time picks up momentum. The "golden unworldly silence" evokes a sense of awe and wonder, as does the description of crossing the clouds and colors at the speed of light. But as the singer approaches the black hole, time and space become distorted, and the journey becomes a little more treacherous. The "whirl of light" is disorienting, but then the singer seems to find some sense of peace in the realm of nothingness, as their personal fears slowly fade away.

The final section of the song is perhaps the most philosophical, as the singer contemplates the nature of existence and finds a sense of unity with the universe. They "overtake time" and gain an understanding of space that makes them feel "united" and alive. Here, the light of love is the ultimate source of comfort and connection, a bright point in the midst of the "greater silence" that looms beyond.

Song about a black hole, space travel, and overcoming the boundaries of space. Fucking Metal.

Assasin Patates

Song about a methaphorical black hole that represents the dark emontions and thoughts in our minds, a space travel that represents the journey one takes to redeem theirselves from that black hole, and overcoming the boundries of space representing ones spritual enlightment. Fucking Metal.

Scott Willard

I think it also covers sleep paralysis, in the beginning at least

GhezHBC

@Scott Willard astral projection through sleep paralysis. the space travel occurs after the narrator finds themselves experiencing sleep paralysis and uses it to astral project

Ben Hagaman

@Assasin Patates yeah agreed - it's most certainly about ego death and enlightenment (see: enter your heart, enter the realm of nothingness, light of love, from greater silence). Love this song.

Vukasin Bajceta you’re not the only one.. I had previously only listened to 3 songs by them (Flying Whales, Stranded and Only Pain). Saw them live Aug 20th at Knotfest and loved their energy on stage. The following 2 days I downloaded and listened to all their albums... been in a neck brace ever since! These guys are fucking awesome 🤘🏼
