For me, this is absolutely THE definitive version of Turkish March. No-one else I've heard plays this piece with as much variation in volume, from 'pp' right through to 'FF'! You can actually 'hear the conversation' which, in my mind, I imagine to be the fearsome Turkish General, barking his orders to his subordinates, who, shielding themselves from his angry gaze, must then repeat them back to him to show they've understood - but in such tiny meek voices!

The secret to playing Turkish March lies in not being tempted to treat it as a race to the finish, as many pianists do - because in so doing, they lose all variation in level, the entire piece ends up being played forte, and the conversation - the meaning behind the music - is lost!

The exception to this rule is Lang Lang (of course) who manages to play it at breakneck speed, and yet still retains the feeling. Very few others can achieve that, and yet, in so doing, it becomes a mere 'party piece' to him - for my money, Horowitz has the pace just right!

Horowitz recorded this piece for Columbia Records live at Carnegie Hall in the early 1960s upon his return from one of his numerous bouts of retirement. It is a beautiful rendition, as is the present video. It's Horowitz! Nothing more need be said.

Well played and great dynamics. But even a master makes mistakes! At 0:17 As per the original score, it should have been p (piano bar #10) and then mf (mezzo forte bar #12, and then p (piano bar #14). What happened to the last chord? That's only a staccato and quarter note time. Other than that, the best performance.

i would say it’s quite possible, nay probable that he didn’t give a fuck what the original dynamic markings were because it’s his interpretation and I have absolute certainty that horowitz is a better pianist than mozart so he can do whatever the fuck he wants

I tend to agree, it's quite possible, maybe even probable, that he didn't give a shit what anyone else thought, who knows. But yes, even masters do make mistakes, as I'm sure Horowitz would admit. Thank goodness this performance was recorded is all I can say.... and as for his dynamics - yes yes YES, no-one can match him!

I must apologize. The great Horowitz did record the complete Sonata No. 11 in A Major, K.331 live at Carnegie Hall. It was not, however, in the early 1960s. I was mistaken. I checked the liner notes accompanying the double vinyl album. The recording was done for/by Columbia Records on April 17, 1966. I wanted to correct myself. For all that, I was not mistaken when I said Horowitz recorded this work upon his return from one of his many cycles of retirement. That much I got right. ¡Qué viva Mozart! ¡Qué viva Horowitz!
